Why is it that Russia and the USA are left to mull it over about intervening to stop violence in Kyrgyzstan? Isn’t there ever an “automatic” call at the United Nations to address “emergencies” like this one?
I am a big fan of the idea for an effective international institution for peace and humanity, but when it comes to the UN, it seems we just get slow and bureaucratic response that arrives way after the horses have left the barn.
Hurry up Mr. Secretary General!

“UN chief confers with European security body on growing tensions in Kyrgyzstan
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon conferred with the chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on the mounting tensions in Kyrgyzstan, as the United Nations assesses humanitarian aid needs arising from the violence that has reportedly claimed nearly 100 lives.
Miroslav Jenca, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), was in the southern city of Osh last Sunday and is continuing his efforts to ensure the peace and stability of Kyrgyzstan.

Mr. Ban and the OSCE official agreed their respective special envoys and that of the European Union would coordinate their response to the crisis, according to information released by the Secretary-General's spokesperson.

The three envoys are either ready in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, or on their way, the spokesperson added.”

It never stops amazing me that no cares what the hell is going on in the world except in my country. More attention is on us and no one really gives a crap about the hundreds, thousands dying and fleeing in Kurgyzstan.
