After years of rumoured speculation, IKEA announced on Tuesday plans to open a store in Winnipeg, Manitoba between late 2011 and early 2013.

The company issued a press release highlighting the location of Kenaston Blvd. and Sterling Lyon Parkway. The store will be 350,000 square feet, but 1.5 million square feet will be needed for parking and roadway expansion along the planned route.

IKEA Canada spokeswoman Madeleine Lowenborg-Frick said, "-The future of an IKEA in Winnipeg is conditional upon Municipal and Provincial government approvals, and IKEA has accordingly now made formal application for amendments to Plan Winnipeg, and for suitable rezoning and subdivision of these lands.

Both the Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg issued a joint statement regarding IKEA's plans:

"The Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg will work together to accelerate the widening of Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway to meet the timelines of a proposed new Winnipeg Ikea site, Premier Gary Doer and Mayor Sam Katz said today.

The premier said the province will advance its share of capital funding to the city of up to $8 million for the projects. The widening of Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway is already included in the city’s Plan Winnipeg, but would be accelerated to accommodate Ikea’s development plans, pending a public rezoning process and open house that will take place this spring."

I live just a couple of minutes from that location, and will be happy to see Ikea arrive.  I was a regular customer at the Ikea in Ottawa, Ontario for years.

Even better, Kenaston NEEDS more lanes!  We have thousands of new homes being built just south of this area, and the traffic is already thick all the time because there really isn't another way to drive north from our part of the city.  I dread when they do the work, but will love the results.

By the way, which corner of that intersection?  NE?  Three of the corners are empty, but this sounds like a BIG building.  The NE corner is wide open land, but has a fence around it, I think from the former military installation, so I'm not sure that land is available yet, or at least not that the public has been told.  There's been a big argument about that land as to whether or not it will be returned to the Native peoples who want to take over it.  The other two possible corners have things on them, but away from the road a bit.  The fourth corner has a commercial storage facility on it.  I doubt Ikea will be moving there.
