Illegal Taxi Arrests
It now looks like the proposed crack down on ilegal taxi services is finally underway in our area. Police had promised to arrest and fine both the drivers and passengers of those found in such illegal and dangerous services.
Now, 3 Britons from Mazarron have been arrested, accused of running such a service by using their own private cars to transport passengers to and from Alicante airport in exchange for payment.
It is worth noting that if an accident were to occur in such circumstances, neither the driver, passenger nor any affected third party would be covered by insurance, which could result in very heavy medical and legal bills for those responsible.
As a simple guide, vehicles registered to carry passengers in exchange for money will display a white rectangular plate with the letters “SP” displayed on it. The driver will have an identity card, containing his details, a photograph and where he is licensed. It is worth checking these things before you employ an illegal provider, if only for your own piece of mind, safety and security.
Since this story broke, it has been reported that the Guardia Civil were acting following complaints from legal taxi drivers and adopted plain clothes officers in unmarked vehicles to track the activities of these potentially dangerous operators.
If you run an illegal taxi service you may wish to consider your position at this time, as the authorities are starting to crack down. You are committing an offence and irrespective of what your opinion might be, you are breaking the law and you know it!
