Obama Officially Backed by International Longshore and Warehouse Union

Kelly Kearsley, blogging for Biz Buzz reports that the International Longshore and Warehouse Union has officially endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president. “The union represents thousands of West Coast dock workers including in Tacoma,” writes Kearsley in her post. “Other ILWU members work in warehousing, manufacturing, tourism, agricultural, and retail positions.”

The ILWU President Bob McEllrath states the “America’s working families are ready for a candidate with a fresh approach who will put people first and hold corporations more accountable.” According to McEllrath, Obama met the ILWU and listened to their concerns. A recent press release from the ILWU noted that the “International Executive Board members made the decision after meeting with different campaigns and examining their positions on key issues that will impact working families in the coming years.” One of the key issues was that they believe Obama will bring the troops home from Iraq.

Could Builders Have Been Responsible for Street of Dreams Torching?

From Seattle Bubble, The Tim responds in a recent post to the recent fires that destroyed the 2007 Street of Dreams. There was a “spray-painted message left on a sheet at the scene,” which seems to indicate the “eco-terrorist” group Earth Liberation Front (ELF) is responsible for the fire. According to the Seattle Times, the homes near Maltby in Snohomish County were first reported about 4 a.m., but “were left to burn through the morning because firefighters were concerned about possible booby traps.”

Snohomish County District Seven Chief Rick Eastman reported that one home is a total loss, and two homes were substantially damaged. Fires were set at a total of six homes. Tim points to another fact that was left out of the Seattle Times and “tacked on to the very end of the P-I story… none of the five showcase homes from the Street of Dreams last summer had been sold.” Tim surmises that regardless of who was responsible, “having the unsold homes burn might actually be better for the builders than having them sit unsold” in our declining housing market. He doubts “the builders are responsible, but who really knows in today’s environment.”

The Hands Fans Pack Neumos for CD Release Party

A recent post from Dan at The Seattlest announces the new CD release from Seattle locals The Hands. The band held a release party last Friday at Neumos, which our blogger says was so packed it “could not contain the crowd that turned out to witness the event.” Part-way through their opening set, Neumos had to open their velvet curtain to allow fans full access to the floor. The band has “delivered a rocking CD via an energetic Last Local Show Ever Before They Go to SXSW and Get Stolen Away From Us Before We Even Really Knew Them And/Or Move To Brooklyn,” writes Dan in his post.

“The CD title is The Hands and… contains a bunch of songs from a previous Hands CD” called So Sweet. However, where So Sweet reminds Dan of The Stones, “The Hands had us seeing visions of CCR.” He calls is a “woodsy stew of growls and guitars which is exactly what we've been looking for from these guys since we first stumbled across them playing a parking lot in Georgetown this past summer.”

Boeing’s Loss of Bid Nothing if not Political

Rick Anderson at The Daily Weekly comments on Sen. Patty Murrey’s response to Boeing’s loss “to Northrop-Airbus in a bid to build new Air Force tankers.” Murrey told reporters, “I sincerely hope politics didn’t play a role in this.” Anderson points out in his post that politics absolutely played a role. “It was Murray, along with Rep. Norm Dicks, who played the political cards in recent years that led to the scrapping of Boeing’s original bid and setting up this win for its rivals.”

According to Anderson, Murrey and Dicks “worked the back rooms and pulled out all the stops to force the government to swallow an overpriced proposal, while Boeing itself was engaging in corrupt conduct.” Sen. John McCain called the whole thing “one of the great rip-offs in American history.”
