I'm Enjoying the Grand Jury Inquiry Into John Edwards' Hypocrisy
I confess that I am enjoying the difficulties ex presidential candidate John Edwards is having, now that a grand jury is investigating possibly illegal payments Edwards made to his mistress out of campaign-related accounts.
Yahoo News says:
The former mistress of John Edwards spent much of the day in a federal courthouse in Raleigh where a grand jury was meeting Thursday, at a time when federal investigators are examining the two-time presidential candidate's finances.Rielle Hunter walked into the building in the morning through a back entrance, holding a young child.
Edwards adamantly denied during a confessional interview with ABC News last summer that he had fathered a child with Hunter, and he welcomed a paternity test. His wife, Elizabeth, has said while promoting her book that she doesn't know if her husband is the father.
A week or two ago, the grand jury heard testimony from the ex-campaign aid who claimed to be the father of Edwards (?)'s baby, so that Edwards could continue his presidential campaign without owning up to the affair he was having his wife was being treated for life-threatening cancer.
The reasons I'm enjoying this spectacle are that:
- John Edwards lied when he said that ending poverty was the cause of a lifetime, when in fact it was just a falsely selfless artifice to get liberals' and leftists' support in the primaries;
- Edwards lied to us when he said, in essence, that only a white man could go to states all over this country and get votes. In fact, Senator Obama beat Edwards first in Iowa, one of the whitest states in the nation, and nominating Edwards would have been the express train to electoral hell for the Democrats. "Edwards Tells Supporters, 'Vote for Me Because I'm a White Man.' ", Huffington Post, October 6, 2007.
- Edwards insulted our intelligence when he said that electing a white man to the White House was the best way to end poverty among the poor (who are disproportionately women and minorities); "What Edwards Doesn't Get About Poverty", The American Prospect, July 17, 2007.
- Edwards lied to us not only when he denied having affairs, but when he dragged his wife and family across country, even taking his children out of school, so that he could present himself as the perfect family man.
- In fact, when the homophobic right wing tells us that gay marriage threatens heterosexual marriage, we should remind ourselves that it's people like John Edwards who pose the most immediate threat to their own heterosexual marriages;
- If we had been taken in by Edwards and voted for him, then there would be a Republican president in the White House right now due to the explosion of news about Edwards' affair and lies that would have preceded last years presidential election;
- By lying to us so much, Edwards was doing the one thing that would most hurt the poor, which was to increase the likelihood of a Republican getting elected president;
- John Edwards cynically used Black people in his advertisements as examples of America's poor, when in fact there are far more whites who are poor (numerically, but not as a percentage of population of these groups)
- In other words, John Edwards quest to become the 44th consecutive white male president of the United States was actually a train wreck waiting to happen, like two trains speeding toward one another on the same track;
- And yet John Edwards cynically took advantage of his white maleness to present himself as the more electable candidate. All-White WaPost List of Potential V.P Candidates
Excludes Obama, Clinton
I guess you could say that I dislike Edwards today not because of who he is. (He's human afterall.) But I dislike him for all that he represents: cynicism, white male entitlement, color and gender-arousing campaign speeches in Iowa and elsewhere; astoundingly hypocritical pretenses of marital oneness that play into the image of perfection instead of acknowledging, as the French do, that there is much that is imperfect within the perfect union of marriage.
So, I admit it: I'm hoping John Edwards is criminally charged with campaign irregularities if he committed crimes, because this helps remind us that white men, too, are human, not demigods.
