The detained head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn has resigned "with immediate effect". He has being in custody in New York since the weekend accused of the attempted rape of a hotel chamber maid.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn says it is with infinite sadness he feels compelled to resign as Managing Director of the IMF. In a statement he denies with the greatest possible firmness all the allegations against him. The former IMF chief said he wants to protect the institution he served and devote all his strength and energy to proving his innocence. Later today Mr. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer will try once again to convince a judge to release him on bail, they will argue that he is prepared to be electronic tagged and confined to a Manhattan location.
