Indecision 2008 Hour-Long Special Mocks Election Campaigns and Voting Day Coverage
Take in a little late-night TV election campaign coverage tonight with Indecision 2008, hosted by satirical news kings Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. Late night programs like Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have enjoyed a month of record ratings with their hilarious and spot-on election coverage, key interviews, and prime impersonations by the likes of Tina Fey.
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert co-anchor Comedy Central's hour-long election night special, Indecision 2008 (10 ET/PT). "We're going to have our election spooktacular — it's the scariest election of all time," Colbert says.
A visit from Democrat Barack Obama helped Stewart's Daily Show earn its highest ratings, 3.6 million viewers, last week. The Colbert Report followed with a record 2.4 million of its own as Colbert's conservative screen persona shockingly endorsed Obama. October was the most-watched month ever for both.
Barack Obama's appearance on The Daily Show saw Stewart jokingly mock the Presidential hopeful, calling him a witch, marxist, socialist and Muslim, among other names. Obama took it all in stride and made jokes, noting that "hardcore Sean Hannity fans wouldn't want to have a beer with me" anyway, so let them say what they will. He added that he "shared toys with my friends in kindergarten," an early testament to his socialist tendencies - clearly.
Immediately afterwards, Stephen Colbert's on-screen Conservative personality gave Obama a shocking endorsement in the popular "The Word" segment, after he had tallied up some of the pivotal Republican figures who switched streams and endorsed the Democratic candidate. "But that does not mean I'm voting for him," Colbert warned. Just because you endorse something, he explained, does not mean you have to support it. Like the constitution, "The Word" screen read.
The hour-long Indecision 2008: America's Choice special LIVE airing tonight will see Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart co-anchoring behind the same desk for the first time ever. The two have appeared on stage together at awards shows, but never co-anchored together before.
"Indecision 2008: America's Choice" will feature the combined forces of the Emmy(R) and Peabody(R) Award-winning series, "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report." Hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert along with "The Best F*& #ing News Team Ever!" (correspondents Samantha Bee, Wyatt Cenac, Jason Jones, Aasif Mandvi, John Oliver, Rob Riggle and contributor Larry Wilmore), the LIVE special will bring viewers political coverage of the historic election with reports and analysis from the field and candidate headquarters.
Head to the Comedy Central website to see what their live bloggers have to say, take part in a live chat, and catch up on all the latest election news.
Saturday Night Live's Presidential Bash, which aired on November 3, 2008, was a full two hours of skit highlights from SNL's wildly popular election coverage from recently and in years passed, interspersed with new taped segments including video from John McCain and Sarah Palin (neither of which was found to be particularly funny by most audience measures).
