India and Canada are planning to strengthen the trade and economic relationships and nuclear commerce in a phased move towards free trade agreements.

The top government officials of both the countries were and  visiting each other in the recent times initiating the discussions.

It is said the  Indian companies were forced  to look beyond the big economies like US and Japan -  those hit hard by the recent recession.

India and Canada are set to boost their economic ties, with the two nation in the final stages of finalising a series of trade-related pacts, including nuclear commerce and moving towards a free-trade agreement.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit Mumbai and Delhi between November 15 and 18 and meet with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, sources said, adding that it is intended to be a turning point in the trade relationship between the two nations.

Last week, India's Commerce Secretary Rahul Kullar met in Ottawa with Trade Minister Stockwell Day and other top officials and signalled that after years of little progress, India was seeking real advances in trade.

Good to hear! Canada needs to look beyond the US too, since they often place "sanctions" against us.

There are already many Indian companies operating in Canada and a reciprocal trade  agreement with India will be of value to both countries.

What is shocking is how long it has taken for the Canadian Government to wake up to the possibilities of strong economic ties with India

Shocking..? I believe that  there were enough India-Canada ties before. Ofcourse there is a need for more.

This is an attempt by the governments to give the whole scenario an official colour. Yeah , and ofourse to find more common grounds.
