India census: population goes up to 1.21bn

Provisional result from India's latest census put the population at 1.21 Billion a rise of 181 Million in a decade. Despite the increase equivalent to more than the population of Pakistan, the growth rate was the lowest in almost a century. Illiteracy rate also fell but the census commissioner said a further lowering of the ratio of girls to boys was deeply worrying. He said it shows decades of social policies including eradication of female infanticides were not working.
