Looking at the Winners/ Leading Parties versus Trailing parties it is pretty clear that Indian National Congress has swept the 2009 Elections. As per the Election Comission of India Data Congress is winning/ leading in 205 seats and it is the second in as many as 141 seats. This is a huge number and if going forward Congress is able to crack 50% of these seats it will be able to cross the magical figure 272 mark by itself. As every one is gloating over the winners, looking at the trailing candidates throw some fascinating insights in this election. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is also emerging as a strong national player with them leading/ winning 20 seats but more importantly the part was second in as many as 50 seats across Uttar Pradesh. On an average the margin for defeat for BSP was about 54,000 votes. So it is too early to write off BSP. In contrast Samajwadi Part managed to come second only in 14 seats, BJP in 12 and INC in 6.

Media is quick to write obituaries for Mayawati and her Bhujan Samaj Party and calling this a coming of age for Congress, but a deep dive into the numbers tell a different story as far as UP is concerned. BSP is still a force to recon with and it came second in as many as 50 seats in UP. Come back for more state wise analysis on Election 2009.
Update 14:56 Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has been declared elected after trailing from almost the beginning. AIDMK is already contesting the election as the victory margin is very small. DMK contested 21 teams and ended up winning or leading in 18 seats so far.

List of all the Political Parties in Election 2009 as per Election Commission of India updates as on 3:08 PM IST.

Out of 543 seats results and trends are like this: UPA 259, NDA, 159, 3rd Front  81, 4th Front 27.
Congress by itself has fared very badly in Tamil Nadu.
Update 14:00 BJD sweeps Orissa Assembly elections 2009 and Navin Patnayak has clearly stated that he will support neither BJP or Congress to form national goverment. It is being said in various media circles that the politics of extremism has been rejected, but the initial trends that are coming out clearly contradicts this. BJP has done exceptionally well in Karnataka inspite of Pink Chaddi campaign and also that in the 4 out of 5 seats in Mumbai; MNS has emerged as the second candidate. So it is really not that simple to predict as to what worked and what did not.

Update 13:40 Ram Vilas Paswan loses his seat from Hajipur. H D Kumaraswamy wins his seat.
Update 12:14 Maneka Gandhi who left her Pilibhit constituency for her son Varun has lost from Aonla. Arun Jaitley formally concedes defeat. He clearly stated that BJP has lost the elections and they have come down below 2004 performance and Congress led UPA has emerged as the largest alliance and should form the government. Update: UPA to form the Next Government. Leading in 243 seats. Gaining majorly vis. a vis. 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Left front is losing its hold on West Bengal!

Acording to the uncnfirmed sources the Muslims indulged in the tactical voting and transferred it votes in the nation to congress after the fatwa decree issued by Muslim Clerics from Ne delhi few days before the election.

That is why certain sections of society are called "vote banks".

The shepherd shouts  "Haai, go there..! and the entire herd goes..!. Shepherd says "Drop..!" and lo, the herd drops dead..!!!

One of the biggest drawbacks of Democracy.
