India Election Results 2009: Ruling Congress Alliance Wins
The Ruling Congress Party has won a clear victory in the 2009 Indian Elections, despite predictions that the Hindu nationalist opposition would take the victory.
The strong showing by the party, which is dominated by the powerful Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, laid to rest fears of an unstable, shaky coalition heading the South Asian giant at a time when many of it neighbors are plagued by instability, civil war and rising extremism.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared victory, telling reporters that voters had given the Congress party-led coalition a "massive mandate."

This has been a month long process and the votes will still take a while to count, but the Ruling Congress Party has declared a clear victory.
India, the most populous democracy in the world, has concluded a month-long process of general elections in which more than 700 million people have voted.

Voting has ended in India's month-long general elections, with the ruling Congress party ahead in early exit polls.
More than 700 million Indian voters have cast their ballots.
The voting took one month to complete and was overseen by more than 2 million police officers and soldiers.
Exit polls put Congress slightly ahead of the opposition BJP, but the contest remains tight.
Results are scheduled to be announced on Saturday.
An outright winner is unlikely and the major parties are already negotiating with potential coalition partners.

India is the biggest democracy. India has a huge educated middle class population. But when it comes to elections, it is not just this middle class which decides the results though it provides the swing. It is the huge illiterate rural population, living in Indian under-developed villages who form a majority of the vote bank.
But the history of elections shows that cashing this rural vote bank is easier through freebies. But making the educated middle class vote is hard. In fact a majority of this middle class population never go to vote. The average % of polling remains around 50, which means half of the eligible population is not voting.
One of the main reasons for people to stay away from voting is that they do not have a candidate they can trust in. It's always either of the big few whom they had to vote for, but none of them have done anything beneficial till date. Thus, the only way they can prevent voting a bad candidate is by not voting at all. But they fail to realize that when they do not go to vote, either somebody votes their vote or it just goes waste and doesn't change anything.
What people are not aware of is that they have a proper way to express this. The voters can indeed say that they do not find a candidate to vote and register it as well, as 49 O. But the existing system asks them to record that in a register without being anonymous. It would be great if the Election commission can incorporate this into the standard voting procedure so we can just vote for this option as though voting for any other candidate. Hopefully, with proper representation, it will happen during the next election.

I dont think it is just my perception but I have never seen the western world getting so interested in Indian elections as this time. India has had many elections in the past and several after we became the largest working democracy in the world. But the kind of interest in the gigantic exercise that the world media is showing is unprecedented.
And the attention of the 'news-doctors' has generally been - India (the largest democracy) goes to polls/ has completed the marathon and the like on the minor; to India may not have a clear winner on the major
I think it is the fragmentation of the verdict that interests the western world more than anything else. This is not in good taste

I heard Rahul Gandhi say some intresting things yesterday, hope he means it. there is also another brilliant man in Indian politics, his name is Omar Abdullah. but he probably has no chance of being the priministral candidate, it would be hard for a huge majority to accept this man. I saw a couple of his interviews and I was suprised to find an Indian politician speak with such clarity and thought.
