India for new initiatives with ASEAN on eco meltdown
New Delhi: India will make a strong pitch for new initiatives with ASEAN countries to collectively respond to challenges thrown up by the global economic meltdown and climate change during the two day India-ASEAN and East Asia Summits beginning in Thailand on Saturday.
In a statement before his departure for Bangkok, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he will discuss with ASEAN leaders new initiatives to accelerate the process of engagement in areas such as greater economic integration.
Leaders from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), India, Japan, China, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia would be attending the twin meets which were twice postponed since December 2008 in the wake of anti-government protests in Thailand.
India's enhanced engagement with the ASEAN was at the heart of its 'Look East' Policy, he said adding the conclusion of the India-ASEAN Trade-in-Goods Agreement in August this year was a major first step in its objective of creating an India-ASEAN Regional Trade and Investment Area.
Noting that India-ASEAN trade has grown at a healthy rate and stood at about 48 billion dollars last year, Singh said the India-ASEAN Summit was an occasion to review the progress in India's relations with ASEAN countries.
"Exporters are passing through a difficult phase as demand has eroded in international markets due to the global economic meltdown"

A laudable initiative, at least India is well positioned to bring cloud to the gathering, because it has an enormous growth potential and Malaysia and Singapore have very good knowledge and experience in how to proceed. Sounds like a great potential can be created.

India's land-locked NE region can grow substantially with the right co-operation with Myanmar. In many ways, NE's growth is more closely linked to ASEAN region. As with Bhutan, Nepal and its own AP, India is capable of extracting the huge Hydro-electric potential for Myanmar. Many primary industries can be developed with this electricity (eg. mining, logging) with scope for increase in manufacturing complexity. As for the rest of India, technologically capable ASEAN entities are successfully bidding for infrastructure projects. If it works for one Indian city (eg. Monorail project for Mumbai), you can be sure that others will want it as well (eg. Bangaluru, Delhi, Chennai). Increasingly, management of public facilties, etc are being handed over to private players with experience (eg. ports may be attractive to Singapore firms). Also, India has a big demand for edible oil (which are favourably produced in tropical climates of Indonesia. Mayasia et al). Trade opp. go both ways!! India and China have been in forefront in developing renewable energy, esp wind. Further progress of these two giants can only take place if there is less reliance on scarce resources (eg. oil, coal, gas, scarce minerals). Technologies developed in the region are likely to be affordable for all - and hence to be encouraged. India is committed to a high forest cover and is gradually improving on recycling waste. ASEAN is a great concept. In security matters, it helps that countries are not dominated by larger neighbours, eg. Japan, China.. even USA.
