India rejects threat of force against Iran

Back in late 2005, India refused to back the referal on the Iranian nuclear case to the UN Security Council, Then, few months back India decided to back Iran claims at the IAEA over the peaceful use of Atomic Energy as provided in the Non Proliferation Pact.  New Delhi had previously refused to back it fearful of loosing support in the Bush administration for the Nuclear Pact with US. Event its proposed gas pipe project from Iran to India became muted. Now, it has again rejected  possible attacks against Iran. Such action would be considered  "unacceptable international behaviour.”

The strong stand against an attack on Iran only shows the concerns of UPA government over the fate of much needed oil for fuelling a growing economy and the need to counteract its former left party allies´ campaign for an upcoming vote of confidence. Thus, the wording of support to Iran does not come out of conviction but necessity.

New Delhi is currently asking IAE to approve an Agreement  for the Application of Safeguards to Civilian Nuclear Facilities. India has never signed the Non Proliferation Pact and developed nuclear weapons secretly.

India decries threat of force against Iran

Special Correspondent

New Delhi: In its strongest condemnation yet of proposals by the United States and Israel to bomb Iran, the Indian government on Monday said any military attack on Tehran would “constitute unacceptable international behaviour.”

Asked about the news reports in Britain and the United States about the Pentagon giving an “amber” light to Israel to prepare for an attack on Iran, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said India is “gravely concerned at these statements threatening the use of military force against Iran.”

Calling on all concerned to “exercise restraint,” the spokesperson reiterated India’s view that “there is no military solution to the issues that are being discussed between Iran and the international community.”

India continues to support “the peaceful path” of negotiations and diplomacy, rather than the threat or use of force, he added.

The MEA statement also noted that any military strike on Iran “would have disastrous consequences for the entire region, affecting the lives and livelihood of five million Indians resident in the Gulf, and the world economy.”

rahul, I like this story. It's good stuff. Yes, Indian government is going to face the general election and they don't want to angry Muslims voters any more especially after allegation that current congress led government is toeing the US government line and Nuclear Deal is against the Muslims.
