Indian and Chinese kids ahead of the game -Obama says US parents
As if Indian and Chinese kids are superhumans. Honestly we don't do much extra effort when in school. If taken an example of top ranking students, all they do is just spend a couple of hours in day for their studies and just pay attention during the class. I have no idea about the Chinese schooling system, but as far as Indian system concerned it is more subjective while comparing to the US system (as far as I know US education system ). In a week an avereage Indian high school student spend 4 hours in Mathematics, 4 hours in Local Language, 6 hours for science, 4 hours in English, 6 hours in humatities and 2 hours for Art and hardly 2 hours for Physical Education. You can guess why the Indian perfomance in Olympics shows such fantastic statistics...!
Obama says....
"We can't afford our kids to be mediocre at a time when they're competing against kids in China and kids in India," US President Barack
Obama has said.
Interacting with local residents at California's Costa Mesa town hall Wednesday, Obama said, "It can't just be a single high-stakes standardized test — but we do need to have strong, powerful measures of performance, because schools are like anything else."
"We can't afford our kids to be mediocre at a time when they're competing against kids in China and kids in India who are actually in school about a month longer than our kids. So, there's a whole bunch of reforms that we're going to have to do," Los Angeles Times quoted him as saying.
He exhorted American parents not to put "all the burden on a teacher".
"If you're not making sure your child does his homework, if you're not reading to them, instilling a sense of excellence and a thirst for knowledge in them, then they're not going to do very well, no matter how good your teacher is. Okay, so that's very important," he said.

Interesting! The public education systems in both is pretty poor: in parts of India, it is possible for teachers not to turn up and still get paid. But the system in both countries is probably very variable. And the level of corruption in the Indian civil service and on the part of politicians (or the number of polticians with criminal backgrounds) does not help to motivate school students.

Very true , Gerry. I have personaly know teachers in the remote villages of Karnataka , who are actually land lords , used to send their children to the farms once they feed them the free meal provided by government. But at the same time India is still lacking the deterrants also - television and internet. So the studends in the remote parts of the counrtry still have no other option but to spend more time with their text books.
As you said every child is aware of the sorry state of Indian civil services. If you see the lateset interviews of the top rank holders of public exams, very few students dream a career in civil services. Any day and time ther prefer the private sector where there is no cast based reservation and only talent is the way to go up the ladder.
Survival skills they learned during their education do come handy at this stage of their life.

Interesting. I can't speak for kids in China, but in Taiwan the student's workload is incredible compared to Canada (vancouver). School hours are longer and usually after school they go to more classes to do more work. I don't know if they are ahead of the game, but kids in Asia are very driven.

Let's put it this way, when an recent asian immigrant child with a thick accent can kick our asses in a Canadian Spelling Bee, something is tragically wrong with our school system.
Have any of you seen the Family Guy episode where Peter is send back to junior high school, and as kids are whipping out their calculators for a Math Exam, Peter grabs an Asian kid from under his desk, props the kid on the Desk and pokes him with his pencil and says. C'mon.......do Math!!
Truth Hurts! I guess they (Immigrants) just want (Success) it more!

I am not so sure about why the math skills going down in US and Canada . Maybe because over depdendence on technology - read calculator or computer.Or maybe because parents stopped beating their kids because they are scared of KHL :-). It is difficult to teach mathematics without a little pressure and a moderate dose of spanking - ofcourse IMHO. It is surprising that people there (US , Canada and all other places where kids lack math skills ) everyone is ok with kids getting into violent sports like rugby and boxing other martial arts, why a lil' spanking by parent is viewed as such a crime?
In the spelling department, again blame it on the spreading of chat and sms language. Oh yeah, Barry...when it comes to accent, I guess nobody is perfect. In all English speaking countries people do believe that their accent is the best accent. If you take India, we always wonder why you Canadians or Amreekkans have this funny, thick accent...! Especially since the English spoken by our Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi brother/sisters are perfectly understandable.
Theory of relativity, I guess.

This just shows that Indians and chinese, are hard workers, only problem, is that this can lead to racism, but if indians and Chinese are chased out of here, mark my words it will not be pleasent for America

Since this came up, American teachers would start giving F's to indians, this is the sign of racism

its true that indian students are faring better in maths and science subjects. it did not happen in a day or two.Education is given top priority in the indian family, subjects like math and science require some hard work that is being possible in indian family because the family supports you and motivates you. the indian father and mother are always there for the children they sacrifice more for the betterment of their children.likewise the children work hard and are dedicated and loving son and daughter who take care of there parents in their old age.that is why u find very less or no old age homes in india.Hence education is a culturally incorporated system in india.
