NP Rank:
Indian brides had 'virginity test'
DISGUSTING...UNFAIR
this incident is shocking, i empathize with those women who had to go through those torturous moments. why are women always demanded to prove their chastity, this whole event of so called Mass Marriage is by itself a foolish thing and to add on to that the women were put through this? the state must take a strong action against people responsible for this and really make sure this does not happen again.
my blood boils with anger .the government who formulates or Aids' such events and term them as Help, should help the girls by providing them with Schools ,Education material, Work Opportunities and not help them get married to some moron who asks for a Test of virginity. The government needs to grow up and change their narrow minded thoughts and acts.
India brides had 'virginity test'
India's National Commission for Women wants Madhya Pradesh state to explain why hundreds of would-be brides reportedly underwent virginity tests.
All the women who took part in a state-run mass wedding last month were forced to take the test, witnesses say.
Several of the women later complained that they had found the exercise shameful and humiliating.
Officals deny virginity tests took place. They said the tests had been to ensure the women were not pregnant.
In India, a bride's virginity is highly prized and pre-marital sex is frowned upon.
'Dubious'
According to reports, young women who had signed up for the mass marriage ceremony in the city of Shahdol, 600km (373 miles) from the state capital, Bhopal, were told about the test when they reached the venue.
Such a shameful act where girls had to reportedly undergo tests to prove their chastity to avail the government's financial aid were sinful
Girija Vyas,
National Commission for WomenAlmost all of them were from poor, tribal families.
Eyewitnesses said the women had to queue up before undergoing an extensive physical examination by a female doctor before they were given a special badge which allowed them to participate in the ceremony.
Several of the women were quoted as saying that they had at first refused to submit to the test - but were told by officials that they would receive their wedding gifts worth 6,500 rupees (about $132) only if they took the test.
"Such a shameful act where girls had to reportedly undergo tests to prove their chastity to avail the government's financial aid were sinful and could not be tolerated in a sane society," the chairperson of the Indian National Commission for Women, Girija Vyas, said.
But a senior administration official in Shahdol, Neeraj Dubey, denied there had been any virginity tests.
He told the BBC that the number of marriage candidates who had turned up at the venue had far exceeded initial applications.
Many of the would-be brides did not have proper documents and some looked "dubious", he said. Therefore, officials present had asked the doctor to examine the candidates, he said.
Officials say pregnancy tests were introduced after a woman gave birth during an earlier mass wedding ceremony.
Mass marriages, generally organised by social organisations, are common in India where the custom of dowry is still widespread.
The scheme in Madhya Pradesh was started in 2006 by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan to aid girls from poor families to get married.
The scheme helped Mr Chauhan's Bharatiya Janata Party win many votes in state assembly elections last year.

This is still quite a common practice in quite a few countries from what I understand - not that it makes it right though.

Maybe of little significance. Sometimes back when Miss Dr. Jayalalitha was the Chief mMnister of Indian state tamilnadu, she too organized a mass wedding, and gifted some money/ dress to the brides. Many of the "newly-wed" brides rushed immediately after the ceremony to breast-feed their babies!
In many cases, people get the kind of government they deserve.

DOMINANCE is the desire of many governmental officials throughout the world, most evident in the treatment of the least powerful among any country's population. In India, women are disenfranchised, so they are the objects of tyranny. America's capacity cruel dominance is evidenced in the treatment of 2.3 million prisoners, 50% of them being mentally ill. Around 25,000 are in solitary confinement torture for months or years, and 60% of those inmates are acute mental patients. The way the Indian brides were treated with a premarital virginity test was cruel, and the fact that it was government-sanctioned cruelty does not supprise me. See the capacity for cruelty to disenfranchised people in this video. Prison conditions within the U.S are nearly as bad as those in the War on Terror camps, although Sen. Webb and others are trying to address the situation now. See VIDEO

It only begins with the least among us. Soon EVERYONE may get a taste of governmental dominance.

The elitist goal is fascism. In India, first, they came for the women . . . .

This is an old news, maybe 6-8 years old. I read it in local news papers and sorry, I don't even remember in which year it happened. One of those "read -and -forget" kind of news, you know - though the "forget" part did not happen properly.
