India's Cricket Tour of Pakistan Officially Called Off
The Mumbai boom blast showing its effect on the track 4 diplomacy of Indo-pak relation. The latest derailment is visible in the arena of cricket. The upcoming series have been called off by the BCCI.Sports do have the quality of healing wounds and improving relations, but government of both sides do not want to loose the oppourtunity to intensify the divide to reap the political benefit.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has been told by the government not to proceed with the tour taking into account the 'recent
developments in Mumbai', a top BCCI official said.
External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and sports minister MS Gill have also personally talked to BCCI president Shashank Manohar to convey their decision.
"The proposed tour of the Indian cricket team to Pakistan stands cancelled," BCCI official Rajeev Shukla told reporters.
India's Test and One-day tour due to start in the first week of January was in serious doubt due to strained bilateral relations between the neighbours following last month's militant attacks in Mumbai.
The Pakistan Cricket Board could lose potential earnings of around $20 million if India cancel their tour starting next month, a cricket official said on Thursday.
India were supposed to play 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and a Twenty20 match on the tour.

Thats really sad, the blast is killing the cricket. The terrorist agenda of derailing the peace process is successful then.
They have successfully diverted the attentiton from afganistan to indo-pakistan.

You have a good point, but sometimes it turns out to be tough for the government in either way, no government will dare to show leniancy after the killing of hundred.

PCB will now face much more economic problems, unless Sri Lanka initiates the tour as they proposed in case of India's tour calloff. We also don't want sports to stop, but when our people are getting killed, then another group of people just can't go onto play a game! So the tour cancellation is a good move.

Well situation says it is good security move, but the series would have allowed to ease the increasing tension.

Some people say that the opposite of religion is rationality. But I think it may well be sports. That is not to say that sports works against religion, but rather it difuses tensions inherent in religion.
Back at Knox College (USA) in the 80's 10% of my classmates were from out of country. The largest numbers of students were from India, the second largest number were from Pakistan. By rights, these students should have hated each other, I guess. What they thought of each other I didn't know.
But I do know that neither group had enough members to hold a cricket game. So on Sundays on those days that had good weather the two would get together on the lawn at the library to play cricket.
Addled-headed intellectuals may complain about sports but I'll bet sports has brought together more folks in peace than any summit meeting or leaders' retreat.

tahts right, catharatic effect do help in controling violence.

Good! We have tried in the past to lessen the tension and it has not served us at all. I think it is time to do things differently. You see, if we continue to do the same things over and over again and expect to see differnt results, we are just being plain dumb.
Taking a stand and putting sanctions is not what we have been doing. It's a welcome change. We are way too soft and see the price we continue to pay for it!

well said, we are soft thats why we are surviving as nation, i hope you will not like to see Balkanisation of India.Terrorism will never be eliminated in this way, we might kill the perpitrators of this blast but this hatred will breed more.so the war will go on till you start crying for peace.

I love the fact that Pakistan faces losses of $20 million with this tour cancellation. It's not a violent way of stating listen dude we are not interested in being friends anymore. Why assume that it will prepetuate violence? Hate is a positive emotion as much as love. Be indifferent to them instead but protect your interests.
I was watching Rambo 3 yesterday...remember the Russians were in Afghanistan for years and this film was actually dedicated by the Americans to the gallant people of Afghanistan...whatever happened to that? Are they now not in Afghanistan? Watch the film closely in today's context. The dialogues seem a sham. This is off the point but I somehow got thinking.
Whatever happened to ...We the people of India...We the people who have solemnly resolved...We the people...we the people promised...we the people...have forgotten?
Pakistan has never forgotten the wars...we have. We are soft on our own governance. We are soft on issues that require us to take a tough stand and we are hard on issues that require us to make space.
For the love of a sport, a nation stands to ransom. How tragic to see what priorities we have as a citizen and a nation.
Lose a family member...infact lose several...it becomes personal. It is personal for me because I have been part of the family that lost a lot, I am part of the Services that defends the borders. I may sound selfish but when the guns are roasting your own blood, it is different. Nobody then cares about a game. It no longer is a game. I do not recommend violence but I recommend patriotism, I recommend soldarity and remembering beyond the week of violence and terror. It has been 21 long years...India is forgetting the last 21 days.

I understand there is anger and pain. First instinct is to retaliate, and makes us feel better for a while. But the pain continues on and on, with no relief, no matter how much violence.
I agree that sports can provide some relief. The wrong group is being punished. Cricket players lose $20 million, not the terrorists.

To call off the cricket, it must be serious..
