Twin blasts in Assam, 6 killed; 30 injured

The serial bomb blasts in the major urban centers of Assam were a bloody reminder of the insurgencies that are raging in India’s north-eastern parts. The fact these took place just ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit was a warning from the militants that the coming elections may not be peaceful. The violence underscored the need for an end to the brutal atrocities being committed by India’s security forces not just in the north-east but also against those struggling or freedom in Kashmir.

Two bomb blasts killed seven persons at Guwahati, the capital of
India's north eastern Assam on Monday (April 06), just a day prior to Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh's scheduled visit to the state.

Police suspect the state's main separatist group, the United Liberation
Front of Asom (ULFA), was behind the attacks.

...
The ULFA is among more than two dozen armed groups in India's northeast,
either fighting for an independent homeland or more political autonomy.

They accuse New Delhi of plundering the region's mineral and forest
resources, neglecting the local economy and giving them back nothing in
return.

...
"There is no law and order in Guwahati. Common man is not safe here.
So we want this government quit on its own and President's rule be imposed
here. So efforts are taken to provide security to common man of Guwahati and
Assam," opined Vijaya Chakravarty, leader of India's main opposition
Bharatiya Janata Party and a candidate in the ensuing elections.
