Indonesian government told to play effective role in helping Palestine

"Despite the very far distance between Indonesia and Palestine and other constraints, the government still has an opportunity to step up its assistance in several ways including political supports," Muzadi told the press here Thursday after delivering his keynote speech in the second day of a two-day international conference on Palestine taking place at the University of Indonesia campus.

The ulemas would also run hand in hand with the government in seeking more effective ways to help Palestine, Muzadi who is general chairman of NU`s central executive board said.

"The government should show its self identity to the world especially to the US through the United Nations organizations based on Indonesia`s 1945 Constitution which stipulates the country`s struggle to reach freedom of any nation," he said, stressing that there must be no hesitation to do this because this is a legal measure.

Asked if this way could deteriorate the relations between Indonesia and the U.S., Muzadi who only a couple of weeks ago visited the Middle East, re-urged the government to go ahead with such actions.

In the near future, NU in cooperation with the government will organize the third international conference of world Muslim scholars to win better and more effective supports not only for Palestine but also Muslims in any parts of the world where many Muslims are suffering.
