Inhofe: ‘President Obama is disarming America’
In a You Tube video today from Afghanistan, Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) blasted an announcement by the Obama Administration that they propose to make deep, widespread cuts to the military budget.
The announcement, made at the Pentagon this morning by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, comes as more than 200,000 servicemen and women are deployed fighting the War On Terror — or, as President Barack Obama prefers, “participating in overseas contingency operations” — in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Gates said his aim is to reshape the priorities of America’s defense establishment based upon lessons he’s learned during his two-year tenure leading the Defense Department and during a career in national security.
“If approved, these recommendations will profoundly reform how this department does business,” Gates told reporters.
The defense secretary added that he reached his decisions after consulting with President Obama, and with military and civilian leaders in the Pentagon. The chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in accordance with his recommendations as well.
“My decisions have been almost exclusively influenced by factors other than simply finding a way to balance the books or fit under the top line, as is normally the case with most budget exercises,” he said. “Instead, these recommendations are the product of a holistic assessment of capabilities, requirements, risks and needs for the purpose of shifting this department in a different strategic direction.”
“I cannot believe what I heard today,” said Senator Inhofe, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “President Obama is disarming America. Never before has a president so ravaged the military at a time of war.
“Here in Afghanistan, our brave troops continue to fight while their president guts our military. Our sons and daughters are risking their lives fighting an enemy whose sole purpose is the destruction of our country and our way of life, while their president disarms America. And all this to support his welfare state.
“The brunt of this decision will be felt by our men and women in uniform right here in Afghanistan. At a time when the Obama administration has put forth a budget to disarm America, Congress cannot, and must not simply go along.”

Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) seems to conveniently forget that the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has spent more time working for a Republican President than this new Democratic President. He also seems to leave out all of the other names involved with the decision as quoted in the article above, "The defense secretary added that he reached his decisions after consulting with President Obama, and with military and civilian leaders in the Pentagon. The chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in accordance with his recommendations as well." Seems like he's trying really hard to make this partisan.
