Tunisia Riots: Police and Demonstrators Clash as Interim Cabinet Sworn In

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators as unrest in Tunisia continues. An interim cabinet, with ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's ministers absent, was sworn in on January 27, but demonstrators are calling for Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi to resign as well.

It has been two weeks since Ben Ali left power, and most Tunisians seem satisfied with the government concessions so far. However, others want to complete the purge of what they see as a thoroughly corrupt government.
The unrest in Tunisia had a domino effect in the region, spilling into Algeria, Egypt and Yemen.

The head of the Tunisian League for Human Rights, Moktar Trifi, said he had asked Ghannouchi "to stop the firing of tear gas and release those arrested".

Running street battles continued into the evening in central Tunis.
