International Day of Peace Celebrated On September 21

Today, the world celebrates the International Day of Peace for the 27th time. The day, which is dedicated to the celebration of global ceasefire and non-violence, is celebrated in all UN member states.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. September 21st became the designated day of celebration as well as a day of ceasefire in 2001.

In Afghanistan, both Afghan and foreign troops are commemorating International Day of Peace by remaining defensive today, only attacking when attacked. Cuba celebrated International Day of Peace with a peace concert.

On 13 June 2009, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a multiplatform campaign under the slogan WMD – We Must Disarm to mark the 100-day countdown leading up to the International Day of Peace on 21 September.
