São Paulo - The São Paulo Press Union (Sindicato dos Jornalistas de São Paulo) provides a variety of training courses and workshops for both practicing and aspiring professionals.

The Course on International Journalism is one of the most sought after of this educational initiative. This year’s edition started this Saturday (4) at the Wladimir Herzog Auditorium under the direction of Moisés dos Santos, a seasoned journalist in the field.

Professor Dos Santos teaches Journalism at the Universidade Municipal de São Caetano. He is currently pursuing his doctoral thesis at the University of São Paulo as well. Similarly, participants in the program spring from some of Brazil’s most prestigious networks and colleges.

The first session was highly productive, as it touched upon topics such as: the impact of new technologies, prospects for the budding professional, who’s who around the world, freedom of expression, permanent conflict areas, politics in Latin America and elsewhere, hot spots, trends, and pitfalls most likely to surface when an international agenda is at stake.

Participants were assigned two jobs for the coming session. They must study the content, style, and profiles of three newspapers: El País (Spain), The New York Times (USA), and Le Monde (France); and also canvas the international media networks in order to spot news concerning Brazil.

The need for such a course is even more relevant in view of the ascending level of interest Brazil has attracted in the international arena in recent years. The participants will benefit enormously from such exposure, as they will be the ones we will soon recognize broadcasting from abroad.
