Iran's first nuclear plant located in the city of Bushehr is to begin pre-launch operations this Wednesday. The beginning of the plant's pre-launch operations coincides with the visit from the head of the Russian nuclear energy giant Rosatom and former Russian Prime Minister Sergey Kiriyenko. Many engineers who will be operating the plant received training in Russia under the contract signed between two states over a decade ago in 1995. Russia also delivered nuclear fuel to Iran to supply the plant.
Iran's official news agency says the country's first nuclear power plant will begin preliminary phase operation on Wednesday after a series of delays.
The Sunday report by the IRNA agency says "pilot stage operation" of the power plant will start on Wednesday during a visit by the head of Russia's state Rosatom Atomic Corporation, Sergey Kiriyenko.
The long-awaited 1,000-megawatt power plant, which was built in the city of Bushehr with the help from Russia under a $1 billion contract, was expected to become operational in fall of 2008.
Some 700 Iranian engineers were trained in Russia to operate the plant.
Iran and Russia signed a contract for completion of the nuclear facility's first unit in January 1995 in Tehran. According to the deal Russia is obliged to provide Iran with the required nuclear fuel and train Iranian nuclear experts.
