Some reports indicate that as many as 30 people may have died.

Aria Airlines is a private carrier; the plane was flying from Tehran to Masshad, skidding off the runway upon landing.

Another 19 people were injured in the crash in which the cockpit also caught fire.

There were 153 passengers on the Russian-made Ilyushin plane.

NowPublic will be following this story as more information becomes available.

At least 17 people reported killed as plane crashes in northeast Iran.
U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its 30-year-old American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes that are harder to get parts for since the Soviet Union's fall.
