After Pakistan left its IAEA seat vacant at the Board of Governors, both Iran and Syria look to fill in. In reaction, the US would oppose any of those candidatures.
Sun, 21 Sep 2008 08:48:34 GMT Iran will nominate for membership of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors, according to Iran's envoy to the IAEA. Ali Asghar Soltaniyeh said that Iran will announce its decision at the IAEA 2008 General Conference slated for September 29. There is currently one vacant place on the IAEA Board of Governors, after Pakistan withdrew its membership. Syria has also announced that it will nominate for membership of IAEA's Board of Governors. Meanwhile, the US has announced that it will do its best to prevent membership of either Iran or Syria on the influential board. The IAEA Board of Governors is a policymaking body which convenes five times a year. Its main duties are to make recommendations to the General Conference on IAEA activities, programs and budget. It is responsible for publishing IAEA standards, considers applications for membership and appoints the Director General. HSH/CW/BGH Original source at PressTV ![]()
