Iran 'would prefer' Obama
Iran says that it is in favour of Barack Obama becoming president of the US rather than John McCain.
Some will see this as a positive reason to vote for Obama whilst for others it will just confirm their view in voting for McCain.
This kind of support is perhaps double edged.
Iran also feels that the current economic crisis will take the US mind off any threat of war with Iran over nuclear plant and weapons questions.
The comments come from the speaker of Iran's parliament Ali Larijani who feels "100% certain" that the US will not consider going to war with Iran now the credit crunch and economic downturn has taken hold.
"We are leaning more in favour of Barack Obama because he is more flexible and rational [than rival John McCain], even though we know American policy will not change that much," he said.
Mr Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, has spoken about holding talks with the Iranian leadership "without precondition", a stance which has been ridiculed by his rival John McCain.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff.
Are we taking bets as to how long it takes the GOP to build an attack-ad around this?

TY - I can't work out why they want to announce it - maybe they really want mcCain - maybe they like the idea of verbal conflict to continue - announce they support one and it brings votes to other - i think Obama would be good for relations with the rest of the world perhaps

McCain's political behavior in the past eight years has been in lock-step with the current administration: in international relations, that kind of predictability is pure gold, since Nation B can accurately guess what Nation A is going to do. That's why hegemonic powers are so quick to install and befriend dictators. In light of this, Iran's public support of Obama looks really weird, since Obama, to Iran, is a totally unknown quantity. I think it's calculated for digestion by the media, in order to drum up American support for McCain, while making us think it's our idea. Hey, it's just a theory.

Having dealt with Bush for so long, playing McCain like a fiddle would be child's play. I can see your theory as a possibility.

Not exactly a welcome "endorsement". However, McCain has his own unwelcome "endorsement" problems with Al-Qaeda.

LotusFlower, I agree - it's a bit of a double edged sword.
In one way, it's good and in another, many Americans might not like that statement at all.
