Iran's Black Day in Perspective

I distinctly feel like I've been through this day before. June 20, 2009 has become a day to be likened with June 4, 1989.

I can't tell you where Barack Obama was on June 5, 1989, but I was with a college roommate in Arizona, where "Oh my god" was among the words as a wave of shock and revulsion swept around the world -- the Tiananmen Square massacre had just played out on TV.

Other thoughts included, "that's all wrong," and "we've got to do something." I could tell more stories from that day, but it was the inception of the China Support Network.

Perhaps today, some U.S. college students somewhere are starting the Iran Support Network. So, let's review:

Who started the China Support Network? John Kusumi.
Whose whereabouts are unknown for June 5, 1989? Barack Obama.
Who's starting the Iran Support Network? It could be you.
Who's unlikely to join? Barack Obama.

Around 3pm today, I tweeted:  "As the Iranian government turns to violence, it loses moral legitimacy and authority. It is time for Obama to condemn the dictator(ship)."

I followed with another tweet: "I believe the U.S. President should be better than a spineless squid."

Moments later, TeheranBureau tweeted: "Conf'd Iran Fatemiyeh Hospital Tehran: 30-40 dead as of 11pm; 200 injured. Police taking names of incoming injured."

I then learned that Barack Obama put out a three-paragraph written statement, an hour before my tweet.

Let's look at that:

For Immediate Release                                        June 20, 2009 Statement from the President on Iran The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights. As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion. Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

=======================
Well, two cheers for lip service that sounds high-minded. But, that's not enough for me to take back my "better than a spineless squid" tweet.

It is worth noting that the three-paragraph written statement was just that -- it was a tract of writing released by the White House.  The President still hasn't stepped up to a microphone, nor said those things on camera.

In other words, this matter was delegated for handling by staff. Let's face it. Just as George H.W. Bush was an old crony and bridge partner with Deng Xiaoping....well, Barack Obama has been wagging his tail because he is very eager to meet and negotiate and engage in diplomacy with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the incumbent Iranian president.

That's a matter that would be conducted at the leader level -- it's a meeting that Barack Obama would not hand off to staff. The U.S. White House has been the home of evil for 20 years, ever since the occasion of Tiananmen Square.

(On that day, it wasn't just China that lost its way -- that is also when America lost its way. Bush would not appear on camera until the next day, when he stepped into the press briefing room and uttered some mealy-mouthed insincerities.)

Barack Obama is the latest keeper of White House evil.  In that sick, twisted, reprehensible world view, civilians can take the hindmost: whatever the rulers dish out. John McCain hopped onto criticizing Obama on this issue before I did, but now that there's bloodshed beyond that of Monday, it's clear that the Iranian government is implementing a premeditated crackdown.

Civilians will get killed and hurt, and Barack Obama will get date night with Michelle. I swear, we ought to make a group, "United Civilians" to stand against evil, whether it comes from Beijing, Tehran, or Washington.

Why shouldn't civilians look upon those three cities as THE REAL Axis of Evil? # # #

Paschen, that is a gross over-simplification of the problem.

Nobody elected Annan president of the world. I didn't vote for him. He ran a corrupt administration, which used the oil-for-food program to line their own pockets.

I don't want UN soldiers patrolling the US. I don't even want the UN in the US. Go to Switzerland, please. Or wherever. Just get out of our country and stop asking us to pay 25% of our bill.

More later.

John first of all my compliments on starting the China Support Network.  This is a great post and definitely provides food for thought.

Today a few students did get together at the University of Chicago and offered help to their fellow students in Iran.  Perhaps you could give them some advice

The University of Chicago/students alumni have set up an alternative to Twitter in case it is blocked  by Iranian authorities. Below is the groups message:

Kofi Atta AnnanGCMG (born 8 April 1938) is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventhSecretary-General of the United Nations from 1 January 1997 to 1 January 2007. Annan and the United Nations were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.

Annan Tried to reform the UN so this sort of thing would no longer be possible by making the UN a real democratic power with out the five veto rights, he tried to create some thing like your idea of a group of Citizen so no massacre or genocide would ever happen again. The US and China where his greatest opponents and Annan eventually left the UN, however the Massacres are still going on and the reforms needed are father away then ever before. The US, China, the UK, Russia, and France failed the World miserably and Civilians are more vulnerable today then they where a generation ago.

You miss understood Roy or I failed to make my self clear, It does not mean Annan to be President of the World nor does it mean that UN Soldier will be patrolling the US, it does mean that they would be a permanent UN Force and that all members vote will count, further it means that the UN will be ruled by a majority and not by five Veto Powers.

I also means that all National Armies can only be used for the self defence of their country and not for aggressive action against another country.

If some one should become a rug state such as North Korea for instance it would be up to the international community and the UN forces to deal with them.

Same in the Case of Iran or Israel and Palestine.

The US contributes so far 22% followed by Japan with 17% and Germany with 9%

No one is asking the US to do more and give more, Countries such as China and India as well as Brazil and South Africa will have to start paying their due, same for Russia and Australia as well as others.

The US have Veto Right so far and are on the security counsel as permanent member that comes with a prise tag attached to it as well, The US have been the greatest Vetoer from 1966 till today. Prior to 1966 the Soviet used their veto more then the US and in the last 12 month there is a tendency by China to us the threat of their veto right.

There has been discussion of increasing the number of permanent members. The countries who have made the strongest demands for permanent seats are BrazilGermanyIndia and Japan. Indeed, Japan and Germany are the UN's second and third largest funders respectively, while Brazil, the largest Latin American nation, and India, the world's largest democracy and second most populous country, are two of the largest contributors of troops to UN-mandated peace-keeping missions. This project has found opposition in a group of countries called Uniting for Consensus.

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan asked a team of advisors to come up with recommendations for reforming the United Nations by the end of 2004. One proposed measure is to increase the number of permanent members by five, which, in most proposals, would include Brazil,GermanyIndiaJapan (known as the G4 nations), one seat from Africa (most likely between Egypt,Nigeria or South Africa) and/or one seat from the Arab League. On 21 September 2004, the G4 nations issued a joint statement mutually backing each other's claim to permanent status, together with two African countries. Currently the proposal has to be accepted by two-thirds of the General Assembly (128 votes).

The idea is to give the people more democracy not less.

United Nations Parliamentary Assembly, or United Nations People's Assembly (UNPA), is a proposed addition to the United Nations Systemthat eventually would allow for direct election of UN Parliament members by citizens of all over the world.

Proposals for a UNPA date back to the UN's formation in 1945, but largely stagnated until the 1990s. They have recently gained traction amidst increasing globalization, as national parliamentarians and citizens groups seek to counter the growing influence of unelected international bureaucracies.

It is very good you are contributing your insight to the readers of NP!

My friend was a missionary in China for a very long time. We have very meaningful conversations.  He recently had a family from China to stay with him for a wedding.  At the end of their visit they both embraced and were deeply moved from the energy of love that was created by honest, genuine  hospitality.  They were so surprised at the wonderful people they met during their stay.  I believe also that these kinds of interactions do more for our international relations than some of our leaders who have their hidden agendas for power and greed.

Many americans do not want the UN here.  Koffi is just an example of true corruption! He should be in prison now .
