George Bush gets shoes thrown at him!

The journalist who threw a show at George W. Bush last week will reportedly go on trial for the incident on December 31. There have been huge demonstrations across Iraq demanding his release.

An Iraqi journalist who flung shoes at US President George W Bush will go on trial on 31 December, his brother and a judge have said.

Muntadar al-Zaidi is accused of "aggression against a foreign head of state" over the 14 December incident.

The 28-year-old, hailed as a hero by some in the Arab world, could face a jail term if convicted.

His brother says he has been abused in detention and plans to file a legal suit over his injuries.

I saw an editorial cartoon with a man watching  the shoe thrower missing the president with both shoes,, saying to his wife "I guess the Iraqi's aren't ready to defend themselves yet."  On a more serious note it appears the security at the press conference was very slow to react.

The brother of Muntader al-Zaidi says al-Zaidi was tortured to get him to write an apology to the Iraqi Prime Minister. While a judge admitted that al-Zaidi was beaten, his brother claims he had a broken tooth and had cigarette burns on his ears.

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush was tortured into writing a letter of apology, his brother said today.

Muntazer al-Zaidi was wrestled to the ground after throwing his shoes during a news conference held by the US president and the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, on 14 December.

It goes without saying that the torture of this popular hero is an extremely serious issue, over which (as mentioned in the Guardian article linked above) thousands in Iraq have protested for his immediate release, but on a lighter note there's Sock and Awe! which has received over 50million hits.
