IRELAND: Working women almost certainly caused the credit crunch
Well written, ridiculous and hilarious!
By Newton Emerson––NEWTON'S OPTIC: THE ANSWER to all our problems is staring us in the face. It may even be quite literally staring at you, right now, across the breakfast table.
So put the paper down, stare back and ask yourself a selfless question.
Does the woman in your life really need a job?
Admittedly, this is not a fashionable question. From Iceland to Australia, men are blamed for causing the credit crunch, while a more feminine approach to finance is proposed as the solution.
Of course there will always be a place in the world of business for exceptional women. Women also have an important role to play in jobs that are too demeaning for men, like teaching. But the general employment of women is another matter. Indeed, working women almost certainly caused the credit crunch by bringing a second income into the average household, pushing property prices up to unsustainable levels.
Whether working women actually caused the credit crunch is now a moot point. The point is that removing women from the workforce would mitigate its effects.
Consider the issue of unemployment. There were 221,301 men on the live register last month and just under one million women in work.
Surely at least half these women have a partner who is earning? Surely at least half would be happier at home? One half of one half is a quarter and one quarter of a million is roughly 221,301. I think we can all see where this argument is going.
It would be ludicrous to suggest that women should be sacked purely to give men their jobs. In many cases, their jobs should be abolished as well.
Women are twice as likely as men to work in the public sector. They account for two-thirds of the Civil Service and three- quarters of all public employees.
Yet they are barely represented in the useful public services of firefighting and arresting people. Encouraging women to leave the workforce would go a long way towards addressing the budget deficit without any downside whatsoever.
Further benefits of sacking women have been uncovered by the Central Gender Mainstreaming Unit at the Department of Justice. According to its research, twice as many woman as men travel to work by bus and train, potentially halving the impact of cutbacks in public transport. However, it is probable that three-quarters of the Central Gender Mainstreaming Unit’s staff are women, so these figures should be taken with a pinch of salt.
While the economic case for fewer women in the workforce is irrefutable, we should also acknowledge the social advantages. Women make the majority of spending decisions in Irish households and make almost all of the purchases. They are far more likely than men to regard shopping as a leisure activity, far less likely to make savings and investments, and were even almost twice as likely to spend their SSIAs.
In short, women were the driving force behind the greed, consumerism and materialism of the Celtic Tiger years and it was female employment that funded their oestrogen-crazed acquisitiveness.
The time has come to build a more sustainable, equitable and progressive society. Why not make a start by telling your other half to quit her job? She can ask you for the housekeeping on Friday.

See those Irish women - they should all be locked up for their own good! Myself included. Yes, it's only to save us from ourselves! ;)

Very good Generaldecay!
I sometimes wonder –what were we thinking anyway! How did we get conned into 'supporting' this crazy neo-classical economic system? ...when we could have it all under the Classical Political Economic system of Land Value Taxation –without income and business taxes. Women could stay at home and take care of their babies, and have a career as well -a flexible time commitment. The world is waiting for us to come to our senses, while the current system is running rampant - infecting China, India, Russia, Sth. America - the world –taken over by real estate speculators –and banks– who feed off us all.
Really, its high time women opened their eyes to the blatant destruction of heritage and habitat going on under our noses, while we are distracted by the latest trends!
Reminds me of a great quote. Here it is:
This quote is attributed to Calgacus, a leader of the Caledonian tribes of Scotland, in response to the Roman Empire’s efforts to conquer Scotland, around 79 AD.
"In them is an arrogance which no submission or good behaviour can escape. Pillagers of the world, they have exhausted the land by their plunder and now they ransack the sea.
“A rich enemy excites their cupidity, a poor one their lust for power. To robbery, butchery and rapine they give the lying name of Government; they create a desolation and call it peace."

HA! I'm so glad you pointed all that out, Maireid. Please, women of Ireland (and everywhere else) SEE SENSE! Get back into the kitchen and make the damned dinner!
I love those quotes! :)

Haute cuisine, all bio-dynamic / organic, of course!
Eco - nomics = house or nature or environment + law or custom.
Today's 'informed' woman needs to study economic theory. How many of us actually know that there are two principle schools of economic thought: Classical Political Economics and, the current system – commons enclosing, land speculation-based successor, Neo-classical Economics.
Who thinks the current system works? Corruption, unjustice, and danger to habitat. I think women should be the first to understand the implications of the ongoing Resource Rent-based debate in economic theory, because we have a vested interest –we are traditionally nurturers and managers of the welfare of others. The sophistry that drives the "me" generation is moral failure personified. Classical Political Economics is no less than about the reclaimation of the global commons for the benefit of everyone on the planet!
The result of applied Classical Economics would be a family life where there is time to enjoy being together –making music, learning, and preparing delicious high energy whole food together. Economic stress would be history - poverty would be history! There is enough land for everyone to have their own home, and they could afford it, and also have the time to grow their own veggies, if they so choose, because they can work at their 'chosen career' when they choose! –9 to 5 is a throw-back to the hard-won labour rights of the industrial age.
Resource Rent / Land Value Tax, the only tax collected, goes to consolidated revenue and a dividend would be paid equally to everyone –a 'living wage'. Working for additional income would be based on choice, when we can work because we want to, not because we must, in order to live a comfortable life style.
And the government only keeps records on the value of your land, –not on wealth gained from your productivity. Taxes are only collected on the value of land, which, of course, can't be hidden in offshore accounts.
The benefits of this equitable taxation system would have a huge impact on every aspect of life on this planet. There would be plenty of funding for infrastructure, education, health, etc. Habitat would be restored. Water, air, and energy would be carefully managed. The arts would flourish in a natural context e.g. people will actually practice their art because they love the experience, and they don't have to be 'poor' as a result.
Terrorism will be a thing of the past - because all terrorism is fundamentally a fight against imperialism!
I could dream on! :) ...but it is possible. That is why I ask the question, "What were women thinking? – when they entered the current soul, family and habitat-destroying work-force.

Yes, and, as usual, it got me thinking. :) Now women are in the same rocking boat as their brothers.
Thanks for commenting, Amy.
