Irish child abuse report: Catholic Church shamed

DUBLIN: After a nine-year investigation, a commission published a damning report Wednesday on decades of rapes, humiliation and beatings at Catholic Church-run reform schools for Ireland’s castaway children.

Quote

A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from

The 2,600-page report includes child molestations by priests ranging from humiliating acts to beating and rape.

The 2,600-page report painted the most detailed and damning portrait yet of church-administered abuse in a country grown weary of revelations about child molestation by priests.

Victims of the abuse, who are in their 50's and 80's, have a major reservation regarding this report i.e. the report doesn’t nail down what really matters — the names of their abusers.

Quote

I do genuinely believe that it would have been a further step towards our healing if our abusers had been named and shamed
Christine Buckley, 62

The report also claims that there was a "culture of silence" among church leaders who turned a blind eye to the abuse.

Quote

In some schools a high level of ritualised beating was routine ... Girls were struck with implements designed to maximize pain and were struck on all parts of the body

Quote

Personal and family denigration was widespread.
Drawing on statements from thousands of former students and officials, the report accused successive generations of priests and nuns of beating, starving and raping children in state-run institutions.

Ireland's Catholic church, on the other hand, is sorry and ashamed of all those happenings included in the report.

Quote

I am profoundly sorry and deeply ashamed that children suffered in such awful ways in these institutions.
Cardinal Sean Brady
The commission interviewed 1,090 men and women who were housed in 216 institutions including children's homes, hospitals and schools.

Many of the children were sent into church care because of school truancy, petty crime or because they were the offspring of unmarried mothers.

Cardinal Brady: In the end the truth will always out. The day of reckoning is upon us! Save your apologies for your afterlife. By you claiming you didn't know proves that you didn't do your job. It makes you as guilty as these sadistic criminals! As you are very well aware, these evil priests and nuns were moved from parish to parish as to veil the rape, torture and, in some cases, murder! Draw on your guilty conscience, and you’ll realise that you knew precisely what was going on! The only thing left to do for these perverted beasts is to come forward and stand trial for their disgusting actions. God is just! Catholicism isn't! - defeated by its satanic self-portrayal. SHAME on anyone continuing to sponsor an evil institution by paying church tax, or filling collection baskets! Quote John Lennon: "Imagine no religion." At long last people can 'imagine'.

There is not much that one can add to this story.

I am amazed that so many can claim that they did not know what was going on.

I am absolutely ashamed to say that I am a Catholic.  The administrators of the Catholic Church from the Vatican down to the Parish Priest should be ashamed.  I don't want to hear "I'm sorry."  I no longer practice my religion because of you, and God understands.  You will be held responsible.  You were given a sacred trust (our children) and you grossly violated that trust.  The Pope brought Cardinal Law to the Vatican --- Cardinal Law should be in PRISON.  What is wrong with all of you self rightous bastards. There is a special place in hell for all of you who are complicit in the violation of our children.  How do you ever justify administering the Holy Eucharist and all the other Sacraments with the same hands you used to inappropriately touch our children ?  And when are we ever going to hear some indignation from the good priests who do their job and truly love our children.  Are you afraid you might draw the wrath of your Bishop or Archbishop or Cardinal or the Pope.  If any of them are complicit in any way I hope they too go straight to Hell.

The Catholic Church has been described as an organization of licenced paedophiliacs

I'm sure John won't mind me altering his lyrics. SING IT ALOUD, peasants!

As soon as you get there they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A wee child in Church care is something to be
A wee child in Church care is something to be

They hurt you at mass and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules

A wee child in Church care is something to beA wee child in Church care is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick their career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear

A wee child in Church care is something to be

A wee child in Church care is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see

A wee child in Church care is something to be

A wee child in Church care is something to be

There's room at the top they're telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the Gods on the hill

A wee child in Church care is something to be
If you want to be tortured well just follow me
If you want to be tortured well just follow me!
