The recent pork recall in Ireland due to contamination of the feed with dioxin from a supposed oil leak during the processing stage has now been expanded from Ireland to the European Union to the United States.
(Why are we importing pork, anyway?)
Here are the news releases by the USA Dept. of Agriculture.
I just received the news today, but this one is dated December 11th.
Why did it take 4 days for me to get this?

"(Why are we importing pork, anyway?)''
That is what I want to know.

I asked a friend, who is a cattle farmer, why the States import pork when we don't need to because we have all the pork we need to feed the people.
His reply to me was that "everyone imports and exports all meat products."
Maybe Ireland produces more than they need and therefore it's necessary for their economy...but why export it to a country who doesn't need it?
In these times when we need to be conserving fuel, this practice of importing meat we don't need, should be reviewed. And how can we inspect places and ensure the products are safe?

This should make the consumers angry. What is this with "health risk: low"? When you buy inspected meat from a reputable vendor, the risk should be nil.

In Kentucky, USA, today it was reported that because of budget problems, the state would not be able to do their inspections of half the coal mines. So, now, the mines don't have to worry about anyone checking to see if they are compliant.
The FDA is so totally underfunded....it's a joke. And the FDA is also in the pocket of big business lobbies....I know I am so hoping the new president elect will also make changes at the FDA. I pray for that to happen more than any change I would like to see in our government.
