Irish Prime Minister Resigns
At a press conference this morning, surrounded by members of the Cabinet, Bertie Ahern announced that he will step away from the office of Taoiseach (tea-shuck) and resume private life on May the 6th.
Mr. Ahern was successfully elected to his third consecutive role as leader of the Fianna Fail (feena fall) Party less than one year ago despite allegations of financial improprieties. There have been recent revelations concerning these questionable dealings, during his time as Finance Minister in 1994, at the Mahon tribunal within the last few weeks.
Nancy Pelosi had invited Ahern to speak before the Houses of Government in the US some time ago and he will remain in office for an additional week after that speaking engagement.
More information here.
Politicians, reacting to the announcement, are offering tributes to the man, while opposition leaders are calling for a new General Election.

Hi Cao, here is a link to some interesting youtube videos re. Ahern.

I'm told that the fellow Cohen who looks likely to take his place is impatient and disrespectful of people generally. How do these people get elected!?
" Cowen is even worse ... he told Gormley that the M3 would be moved over his dead body or words to that effect.
He is renowned for his total arrogance and dismissal of those he considers lesser than himself."

I don't like Cowen at all. Ahern was a cad, and there's no doubt about it, but Cowen is a hard case. We'll see how it goes, I suppose. He hasn't done anything drastic yet anyway!

Thanks Mareid, Cowen is the present Minister of Finance and is captaining a sinking ship. He doesn't have the charisma of Bertie and could face challenges from the opposition that would call for new elections. Interesting times ahead!
