Irish secondary schools have been given a guide to help them support their lesbian, gay and bisexual students after research showed that four out of five teachers witnessed verbal homophobic abuse but did not know how to handle it.
Homophobia is still a huge problem in Ireland, not least because of the negative influence of the Catholic Church on perceptions of homosexuality in Ireland. So this paper, published by the Education Department and the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network is a welcome move and is not before time.
The Irish Minister for lifelong learning, Sean Haughey, launched the report today, saying that “the 21st century school is one that is safe and supportive of all students, including lesbian, gay and bisexual students. As with all bullying in schools, homophobic bullying is unacceptable and a whole-school approach is required to ensure that lesbian, gay and bisexual students are safe and supported and achieve their full educational and personal potential.”

It's ironic that the Catholic church teaches bigotry against lesbian, gay and bisexual people while high ranking church officials engage in sexual predation against children -- Bishop Lahey seems to be the latest.

Barbara, really. In fact, I said as much in a piece I highlighted recently about the Vatican's attempts to excuse its priests' abuse.
Thanks for the recommendation and comment.

Very good news, generaldecay! Perhaps the US Department of Education, including state levels, will take notice.
