In Sonoma County,  CA all religious symbols  -  angels and stars -  have been ordered removed from Christmas trees after a retired marine lodged a complaint that they were offensive and symbolized the "cult of Christianity".

The veteran lodged a formal complaint after noticing an angel on top of a Christmas tree;  all such symbols will now be removed from government buildings.

A 1989 Supreme Court ruling backs the removal of all religious symbols from government and public buildings.

Sutley said the angel violated previous court rulings concerning holiday displays, including a 1989 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found that government-sponsored Christmas trees decorated with religious symbols constitute an illegal endorsement of Christian doctrine.
FOX News
There's no place for angels atop Christmas trees, according to one California man who successfully lobbied for the removal of religious symbols at county buildings after spotting a yuletide decoration last week.

Stars and other religious emblems were ordered removed fromChristmas trees in all government buildings in Sonoma County on Monday following a complaint by Irv Sutley, a disabled 65-year-old Marine veteran who said the symbols were "extremely offensive" and part of the "cult" of Christianity.

"I just don't believe government has the right to intrude on anyone and force them into sectarian behavior," Sutley told FoxNews.com. "I've opposed Buddhist statues, the star of David — anything of a religious nature."

Sutley said he filed the complaint with acting County Administrator Chris Thomas on Dec. 18 after noticing an angel atop a six-foot tree in the lobby of the county recorder's office. Sutley, a lifelong atheist and chairman of the county's Peace and Freedom Party, said he visited the office last week for his re-election bid next June.

Hmmm......I guess being a Vet and Proud of his country isn't worth anything.  So, i guess he'll take off the Stars and Stripes on the U.S. Flag during his funeral.  Here's one vet to another, Get OUT Of OUR COUNTRY IRV SUTLEY!!!!  Your a disgrace, you don't even worthy of calling your self a Marine Vet.  WOORAAH!

I think it's kinda funny that supposed "Marine" could be so terrified of a little stuffed angel. Marines are tough guys - not afraid of anything - but not this guy. Irv Sutley needs his Mommy. WOORAH!

I was shocked,  myself,  that this was a Marine veteran.  And really,  there is NO excuse for it.  My parents were not religious;  they were liberals and never took us to Church or had us pray,  and we were taught not to believe in any religious tales.  YET we always had angels,  baby Christ, Mary and Joseph, the manger, at Christmas,  and Haindel's Messiah playing,   because my parents believed they were important universal and cosmic things,  and wanted to instill a sense of wonder.  This story is really stupid, that is why I posted it.

I am a Communist but I do not hate the United States. I am still very upset that the Soviet Union fell all those years ago but, hopefully one day it will rise from the ashes of its defeat. Power to the SACP, CCCP, and the USSR!

Woah, I can't believe this story

Freedoms across communities should not always be at the beck and call of an individual whim.  While collectivism is not the goal, I am sure an individual posted this star and decoration. It makes my mind spiral to think that some atheist (which is itself a religion) can impose his religion on everyone else by forcing the removal of articles of decoration. So now, we have atheist religious zealots enforcing their doctrines on the rest of the country.  Sounds like idiocy to me.

Irv Sutley,I too am a U.S. Marine, and you sir are a disgrace to the Corps.  Maybe you want to read the writings of our founding fathers and several Presidents to get a real feel for how important Christ was for them while leading this country.  As far as I'm concerned, Atheism is a religion that worships Satan, you are either with God or against Him, so that puts you on the wrong side of the fence.  Not a wise choice.

THIS GUY IS A DISGRACE!!!  In one interview, he said he didn't have a problem with Christmas Trees because "in my opinion, they are not Christian symbols" .. Irv you freaking moron, the whole day is a "Christian symbol" .. why do you even care if you are an Atheist?  Without Christians, YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE A CHRISTMAS TO CELEBRATE!

And oh by the way, for all the "Separationists" out there, please feel free to show me where in the Constitution where there is any mention of Separation of Church and State .. what a freaking myth .. quit trying to add stuff to a sacred document!

One Marine out of millions! HA!

Apparently he has an axe to grind. People like that are typically miserable SOBs that want to spoil other people's fun and are crying out to whoever will listen that they're in pain.

The guy needs to dry up, possibly get sober, and take advantage of his VA benefits by seeking psychiatric solutions to his anti-Christian phobia.

The sad part is that they reacted to his whims.  Go figure.

I doubt that he's legitimately a vet, much less a former Marine. My bet is that he's scamming the VA. He needs to be taken out.

His comment..."I just don't believe government has the right to intrude on anyone and force them into sectarian behavior.". Placing and angel on a tree is not imposing nor forceful. No one is holding a gun to his head and making him worship, or even acknowledge that there is anythng there. He has the God given right as an American to choose. If he sees it as an angel and a religious symbol, good for him. if he sees it as a decorative plant ornamentation... good for him too. He's a spoiler. This is his 15 mins. of fame. He hasn't won any of his elections ( www.joincalifornia.com/candidate/2381) and he has a need to be heard. But I think the townspeople need to be heard too. Does one man posess that much power to scare the officials into removing the decoration? Are they afraid of a law suit? It must be hard to be a town official and fear for your job everyday because of people like Irv. He's one voice. The people of the town need to speak up - especially on election day. It's a shame that he is what he is - a spoiler.

I believe the man has a point, and to the rest of you unintelligent beings here is something u could understand.Swastika is a religious symbol of the Hindus from the time immemorial but jsut because Hitler used it in the second world war its  an offensive symbol to each and everyone in the western world. It is prevalent in India and Hinduism and they still use it with a lot of devotion and pride. Now there is an analogy !

Equating a swastika to an angel is a far stretch.  Not much of an analogy,

This "Irv Suttling" is a coward... pure and simple.  The USA was founded upon Judeo-Christian ideals.   Don't like it?   GET OUT!.  Go someplace else.   Push your BS ideals on other igororant idiots.  Stop taking advantage of hardworking Americans.   Get out of this wonderful, beautiful country that believes in GOD AND COUNTRY.

Irv, you're a repugnant, vile, disturbing creature that obviously has no life, no character and no soul.  It is slime like you who crawl out from under their rock at this time of year to rob and rape what little is good and decent left in this country to reap your own selfish happiness.

This hits the nail on the head and worth repeating.

I have one comment: WRITE: Contact: Jim Toomey ∙ (707) 565-2188 jtoomey@sonoma-county.org He needs to hear from people, that know matter how much noise one whacked out person makes, they should not have this type of clout. Pathetic, not sure who is worse, Irv or the idiots that allowed him to have his way.

Atheists – What kinds of thoughts do sex slave owners and customers think? Do they fear eternal separation from God or do they think as you do: “No God here.” You atheists are the enablers of the most vile people in the world along with murderous Islamists who are the same as you, but with empty words of their god and religion that were created by vile thinkers as you.

What happened Irv, did somebody touch you in the wrong place when you were little? Did you not get breast fed? Bwaaaaah, Irv needs some attention and Irv wants it now. POS Go to Iran and stay there, prick.

What an idiot !! Why stop at complaining about the angels. The whole celebration of Christmas stems around celebrating the birth of Christ !!!

So take down the angels!! Take down the Christmas Trees. Don't dish presents. Don't take time off... and yes ... Irv go spend tomorrow at the office and celebrate being stuck up git who can only look forward to one day dying and turning into fertilizer!!

What is happening to our world? I would like to ship this irv sutley to a work camp and decorate his cell with stuffed angels and pictures of Jesus and then see what he thinks.
