‘Islam is violent’ says President Obama’s new pastor Carey Cash

More than a year after he was forced to disown his Chicago pastor, President Obama has begun to attend services led by a Christian chaplain who views Islam as a violent faith.

This will do nothing to help Obama’s oft-flailing reputation in some sections of the US population. (Although, of course, it will boost his ratings in others.) I can’t help but think that it is unfortunate that President Obama has decided to align himself with this Pastor, whose views are clearly biased and in some ways very dangerous.

Mr Obama has been an irregular church attender since becoming President, but has expressed a fondness for Carey Cash, the navy chaplain at the Camp David presidential retreat who has been criticised for proselytising in the military and his mistrust of Islam.

In the ongoing ‘war on terror’, I feel that the President should not do anything to antagonise the Islamic community and to make Muslims feel even more alienated from (and within) the western world.

In a 2004 book describing his deployment to Iraq the year before, Mr Cash calls Islam violent, a faith that “from its very birth has used the edge of the sword as a means to convert or conquer those with different religious convictions”.

(Note: Obama has not named Cash as his 'new pastor' and this is an assumption made by the Times. It may well be incorrect.)

Think perhaps the pastor needs to study history a little closer

..................perhaps others as well.

Mr. Cash needs to learn history from an unbiased standpoint for sure...

Politically wrong move, but historically correct.

Christianity was violent as well, but has overcome that.

Let's see Islam do that as well.

Sorry about the double comment posting..machine froze so I double hit the submit button. The right hand column yes/no refers to whether it was religious inspired or not. I thought it an interesting summation

In the 20th century in the West, no real religious wars. Atheists were the war-mongers, from Nazis neo-pagans to purely atheist Marxists.

Good data, there, RNG.

"Aztecs" refers to their own bloody, ruthless rise to power from oppressed minority to rulers of the Aztec Empire or does it refer to Cortez?

Roy C must be blind. USA was founded by murders that killed native americans then, started the American war. It was the ANGLO SAXONS that killed many catholics or Mexicans of south west defending its nation against ANGLO SAXON invasion. And that is bc USA and the anglo saxons are all protestans killers.

Exuse me about the Pagan thing. Calling them War-mongers, You need to get a life here Mr. you think anything that is not the Christian religion is Pagan or Athiest? Pagans and Athiests have been plagued for centuries by Christian believes and killed off. As a matter of fact most of our founding fathers were Athiest. That is why the Bill of Rights and Constitution was written the way it was. Hitler claimed to be a Christian and look what he did to the world. The Roman Empire would have more than likely never of fallen if it wasn't for Christianty. I think everyone one needs to look at history from all sides not just one.

Aztecs (1375-1419)

  • Estimated Total of human sacrifices among Aztecs:
    • Michael Harner (1977): "In 1946 Sherburne Cook, a demographer specializing in American Indian populations, estimated an over-all annual mean of 15,000 victims in a central Mexican population reckoned at two million [i.e. 1.5M sacrificed per century]. Later, however, he and his colleague Woodrow Borah revised his estimate of the total central Mexican population upward to 25 million. Recently, Borah, possibly the leading authority on the demography of Mexico at the time of the conquest, has also revised the estimated number of persons sacrificed in central Mexico in the fifteenth century to 250,000 per year" [i.e. 25.0M per century] [http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/aztecs/sacrifice.htm]
    • William Prescott, History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843): "Scarcely any author pretends to estimate the yearly sacrifices throughout the empire at less than twenty thousand, and some carry the number as high as fifty!" [i.e. 2-5M per century] [http://etext.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/PreConq.html]
    • Wikipedia, as usual, takes the extreme viewpoint that there was hardly any sacrifice at all, maybe 300 to 600 annually, or 30,000-60,000 per century. [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_sacrifice_in_Aztec_culture (Aug. 2006)]

  • Whole heap of useful date here http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/warstatz.htm#RelCon
