Israel Arming itself for Bio-Chemical Strikes by Iran?
Israel has begun the distribution of millions of protection kits against biochemical warfare, according to Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai. Vilnai stressed that the campaign is not with regard to any impending attack:
"We have equipped ourselves with millions of protection kits against biological or chemical warfare, and a massive distribution programme for the population started today," Vilnai told army radio.
He added that these kits can be received at home by all Israeli families, and that Israeli post offices could ship them at a rate of 25 shekels, or that they could be obtained without cost at local post offices.
Recent escalations of tensions in East Jerusalem over settlement construction have added to the feeling of imminent clashing:
Despite the deputy minister's protests, it has been duly noted that the distribution came as an aide to Iran's supreme leader was quoted by the Islamic republic's Fars news agency on Tuesday. Within that quote was a warning that Iran would hit the Tel Aviv region with missiles if it came under attack.
The bragging of Iran regarding its missile capability which is supposed to be able to reach Israel, is nothing new. In recent months, both Israel and Washington have not ruled out a military strike to halt Tehran's escalation of the manufacture of nuclear weapons.
An Inevitable Iran/Israel Conflict?
The decision to distribute eight million new gas mask was made by the Israel government back in early January, officials have said.
Israel has engaged in preparation for some time regarding chemical or biological strikes which it may sustain in its conflicts with surrounding adversaries.
The country came under sustained attack during its 2006 war withLebanon's Hezbollah militia, when more than 4,000 Katyusha rockets were launched at north Israel in 34 days, sending hundreds of thousands of residents fleeing south.
President Obama has now termed the nuclear capabilities of Iran "inevitable". The uranium enrichment program in Tehran, supposedly for energy use only, will be used as a means to manufacture nuclear weapons.
The President has also stated that it is a fact that Iran has moved forward with things which are prohibited by the UN Security Council, adding that the standards of the International community are such that no nation is denied the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy , but that strong sanctions and possibly even a military strike have been in the offing for some 15 months, should Iran prove to be in bad faith.
Recent escalations in East Jerusalem of Palestinian -Israeli conflicts over Prime Minister Netanyahu's plans to go ahead with the construction of Jewish settlements in the region - against strong urgings from Washington - have heightened the tenseness and brought incendiary language from Ahmadinejad.
