Israel bans Arab parties from coming election

I am very worried about the state of things in the Middle East. Please, stop firing and start talking and treat everyone equally.

Israel on Monday banned Arab political parties from running in next month's parliamentary elections, drawing accusations of racism by an Arab lawmaker who said he would challenge the decision in the country's Supreme Court.

This is very worrying indeed. One of the main arguments supporters of Israel use to defend it is to say it is a democracy. This action shows that that is clearly under threat.

Apparently, they have tried to ban these parties before. The high court overturned the decision. The problem now is that the election is only a few weeks away so they may miss out on the upcoming election.

The two parties are the only exclusively Arab blocs in the Israeli Knesset, however the decision does not effect Arabs in predominantly Jewish parties or the communist party.

Together they hold seven of the 120 parliamentary seats.

About one-fifth of Israel's seven million citizens are Arabs with full citizenship rights, but have suffered due to discrimination and poverty.

Given the stats above, it is fair to say that a very large proportion of Israelis,  5-15%  will have no representation, no voice, in the upcoming election.

Avigdor Lieberman, the leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party which petitioned for the Arab parties to be barred, described the Arab MPs as a "fifth column" clandestinely undermining the nation.

Ahmed Tibi and Jamal Zahalka, who lead the two Arab rivals in parliament, joined together in condemning Monday's decision.

"If the members of the panel had weapons, they would have shot us in the head," Tibi said.

So much for not being Apartheid.

Then again failing to have a constitution, Israel can do pretty much as it pleases. However I would not favour Political parties based on Race, Religion or Ethnicity either.

Politics has to remain laic.

After the long history of attempted Arab destruction of Israel, they're lucky to be allowed to live there in the first place. I'm so sick of hearing about the  poor Arabs and Gazans, who spend their lives trying to destroy Israel and commit genocide on Jews. Israel's government is no Hamas.

You sound like the little man with the small moustache from Germany in the 1930's

We live in this land for more than 1000 year, we just live our  lives, did not attempt to destruct Israel, we are not poor but proud arabs, jenocide was in the 1940/45's and no arab had any part in it

WE WANT OUR FUNDEMENTAL RIGHTS AS ISRAELI.
