This is good news and bad

news. Israel stopping shooting

is good but if Hamas resumes

attacks then full warfare could

resume.

Israel plans to halt its Gaza offensive without any agreement with Hamas, a senior Israeli official said on Saturday. The Islamist group vowed to fight on.

"The goal is to announce, subject to cabinet approval, a suspension of military activities because we believe our goals have been attained," said the official, asking not to be named.

Israel launched air raids on the Gaza Strip on December 27 and ground troops moved in a week later.

Without an accord with Hamas, diplomats said they feared Israel would let only a trickle of goods through Gaza's border crossings, hampering reconstruction and creating more hardship for its 1.5 million people.

The one and only reason Israel will stop bombing is for Obama's inauguration.

That could be one reason but not the only one.

I see little change in Israeli policy with Obama.  He has already said Israel has a right to stop rocket attacks.

Hamas will go to extinction to prove a point now won't they, no matter how many others get killed who don't share their sentiments

I agree. Hamas is one of the worst governments in the world.  Gaza people deserve betterl

The Israeli's plan to take up and hold positions in Gaza, continuing an unlawful occupation and provoking the terrified subjects of the Israeli inhumane blockade of Palestinian human rights. I suppose there is a plan to provoke the extreme frustration and pain and suffering to react to the still presence of the occupying Israelis armed and ready to shoot at the least  violence their presence provokes. It's a little like blindfolding the prisoner on their knees and shouting aim, ready.... and holding things at taht, awaiting the prisoner to scream and then seek justification for shooting her.

I don't think so.  There is no advantage to Israel occupying Gaza again.

You misjudge.  If the plan of Israel was to kill civilians they could have killed 100,000 by now and rockets still falling on Israeli women and children are provocation enough if they wanted to continue this war.

Yes, you're right con 1 Ot.

Hamas is under a death sentence. And that death sentence shall be carried out if it doesn't appeal for it's life, renounce rocket attacks, recognise Israel.

It's called losing a war. War is a dirty game, and the winner takes all.

I sincerely hope that Hamas lives on, changes its posture, reunites all Palestinians and proves that it is more than a terrorist organisation.

The odds for that happening? Slim in my view, but I would still like to see it happen, for the sake of peace. For Palestinians and Israelis alike......

Respects.

I'm glad to read that.

What the world thinks of Israel is of no importance to Israelis. If my country was attacked, I'd do (and have done) what needed to be done too, whatever others thought of it.

I hope Hamas accepts this decision, because enough blood has been spilt.

Hamas was surprised by the violence of this reaction and they now realise the military battle, as well as the propaganda battle, has been lost. The ball is now in Hamas's court.

Time to move towards peace.........

I agree with your comment.

Too much blood

Time for a lasting cease fire.

It's interesting to read the news story just before a ceasefire was announced and how Hamas seemed like they didn't want it anyway - not that they would I suppose.

Enough fighting already - it's time to take a step back and see what other options are available; that's just my opinion of course.
