The AFP is reporting that French troops have taken over Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport located 16 kilometers southeast of the Ivorian capital, Abidjan and another 300 extra soldiers have been sent from France to the country.
This comes as troops supporting the two rival leaders in Ivory Coast continue to fight for key buildings in the main city Abidjan, including the presidential palace and state television station. There were reports of heavy artillery fire as forces loyal to the man internationally recognized as the new president Alassane Ouattara closed in on those supporting his rival Laurent Gbagbo. Four United Nations soldiers were seriously injured during the day.
Alassane Ouattara forces say they are now making a final push to take over the city, reinforcement have been pouring in, pickup trucks packed with young men. But the fighting appears hap hazard and likely to drag on. Laurent Gbagbo who lost last year’s presidential election remains somewhere in the city. It is hard to see how his forces could win this, but they are clinging on. The battle for Abidjan will be decisive.
