It was standing room only at Beaches-East York NDP candidate Matthew Kellway's Campaign Office last night as a crowd of close to 200 piled onto the Danforth Ave sidewalk at Roseheath Ave in Toronto's East End, cheering the arrival of the federal leader of the New Democrats Jack Layton.

With songs from a Piper and a few with blow horns supporters braved the sometimes steady rain waving signs and chanting “PM Jack, PM Jack”.

"I have a big umbrella with lots of room for you guys" Layton's Wife, NDP MP Olivia Chow offered moments before the Campaign Bus arrival as she wandered through the assembly towards the Media.

The crowd became deafening as the bus pulled up and the doors opened revealing Jack Layton who immediately began to thank everyone for their support.

“The winds of change are blowing in" Layton said, "we're not done yet"

"We need to convince as many people as possible to get out and vote" He continued, "You need to bring along family, friends and even people you've never met before".

Layton promises to go after big oil companies, bring the troops home from Afghanistan, and improve income support for poor seniors.

Recent polls show the NDP trailing the Conservatives by only a few percentage points with a growing gap between them and the Liberals. If these polls hold true the NDP could become the official opposition for the first time in the history of the party. Assuming of course, the NDP don't somehow skirt past the Conservatives for the win.

The Danforth stop was Jack's second last appearance of his election campaign before going on to Emily Carr Public School for a final rally.
