BMWBlog confirmed the news that Jack Pitney had died:

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Jack Pitney, BMW of North America Vice President of Marketing, was killed earlier today in a tragic accident while on vacation at his farm.

In a press release on Friday August 27, BMW reveals that Jack Pitney was on his tractor and attempting to pull a tree stump from the ground. That is when the tractor flipped with him still on it, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body is undergoing an autopsy on Friday and funeral details will be announced soon.

NJ.com reported at the time that vice president of corporate communications for the Woodcliff Lake importer told them that Pitney was working on his tractor at his farm in Dutchess County New York.

Pitney used to work for Mazda, but moved over to BMW when they were launching the Mini. He was also behind the launch of models such as the small 1-Series and X-model sport activity vehicles.
