NBC Has Now Revealed That An NBC News Producer Spoke to James Jay Lee During the Hostage Taking on Wednesday

(This story contains some offensive language).

The news channel said they did not want to release the conversation until the hostage taking was over.

James Jay Lee held up the Discovery Channel Building in Silver Spring Maryland for hours on Wednesday, and he took three hostages. He was eventually killed by police when he pointed his gun at one of the hostages.

Now NBC reports that they spoke to Lee during the standoff and recorded the 10 minute conversation (watch a video of the incident). They had called the building to check on the hostage situation and that was when Lee came on the line.

He identified himself as James Jay Lee and told a producer:

“I have a gun and I have a bomb,” he said. “I have several bombs strapped to my body ready to go off. I have a device that if I drop it, it will fuckin’ explode.”

He also told the producer that he had been working on the explosive devices for about three weeks to a month and had done a lot of experiments. When asked how he had learned to make the bombs, he replied that he had gathered information from reading and he already knew how to weld, but that he also picked up tips from the Discovery Channel show Mythbusters.

He also made many references to his manifesto published online and the Daniel Quinn book My Ishmael
