Jan Brewer Deals with Debate Fallout by Refusing Future Debates

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer is swearing off from debates for the rest of the Arizona election period. This is one way to limit damage caused by her disastrous August 1 performance, presuming that Terry Goddard doesn't try to capitalize on Brewer's errors, or if the press backs off on her inability to get her story straight on the fictional "headless bodies" littering the Arizona desert.

Unfortunately for Jan Brewer, Terry Goddard is pressing the attack, and the media won't leave her alone. Nor should they.

Jan Brewer backpedaled a bit on the headless bodies claim, saying that the rest of the world misconstrued what she was saying, and that she was referring to another state. Too bad the video of her explicitly making that very claim is all over the web.

James Carville called Brewer's performance the worst in history. Not necessarily. There have arguably been worse from both Dems and the GOP, but, let's be honest, not recently. The far right will likely still champion Brewer, but everyone else has to be wondering how capable she is of backing up her platform if she's crumbling this easily, this early.

Regardless of political views, I feel you can't let Brewer get away with no more debates and walking out on the press.  Our democracy depends on voters being able to see candidates defend their positions and how they respond to pressure.  To allow Brewer to get away with this will encourage future office seekers to avoid debates and the press entirely.  That will lead to only dynastic names and billionaires getting elected.
