Japan has been pushed back into recession by the earthquake and tsunami in March and analyst predict further economic shrinkage before a recovery. Official figure for January to March show a contraction of 0.9 percent, the equivalent of an annual decline of 3.7 percent worse than expected. Disruption to roads, factories and power supplies hit exports and consumers spent less.
