The Orlando shooting at Gateway center carries echoes of the 1993 shooting at 101 California Street in San Francisco. Jason Rodriguez, the suspect in the Orlando shooting, is a former employee of one of Reynolds Smith & Hills, one of the tenants of Gateway Center. At 101 California, Gian Luigi Ferri showed up at the Pettit & Martin law firm and opened fire, killing eight, wounding six, and then killing himself. Gian Luigi Ferri had done business with Pettit & Martin several years before the shooting.
Gian Luigi Ferri's rampage at the law firm of Pettit & Martin on July 1, 1993, was the worst mass shooting in San Francisco's history.
There was no apparent link between Gian Luigi Ferri and the victims in the shooting, and all that the victims' families had to go on was an incoherent letter found on Gian Luigi Ferri's body.
The letter, filled with misspellings and grammatical errors, said, "The last thing that made all of this come to a head is that I am one of those people of the 5% of the population (12.5 million people), where the poison monosodium glutamate (MGS) has reached such high levels in our cells, that a minimum amount more can kill us."
