NP Rank:
Jewish Running Mate for John McCain?
Eric Cantor has been named as a possible running mate for US presidency candidate, Republican John McCain it has been revealed by the DAILY TELEGRAPH.
Eric Cantor, 45, would be a dramatic choice for Mr McCain, who is running almost level with Barack Obama in national polls but whose aides believe he needs to shake-up the White House race if he is to prevail in November's general election.
Aides to Mr McCain revealed that Mr Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, had been asked to submit documents as part of a rigorous vetting process to hunt out any closet skeletons.
He joins a shortlist believed to include Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and Mr McCain's bitter rival during the Republican primaries, Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota governor, and Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman and budget director in the Bush administration.
Of the four, Mr Cantor would be by far the most exiting - though potentially risky - choice. A prodigious fundraiser with a young, photogenic family, support from evangelical Christians and strong backing from hard-line conservatives, he would shore up many of Mr McCain's weaknesses.
Mr Cantor would be the first Jewish vice-president, an historic milestone that Senator Joe Lieberman just missed in 2000 when Al Gore lost to George W Bush by 567 votes.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff. But I don't see what him being Jewish has to do with anything. My brother in law is Jewish ran for office in the City of Norfolk no one ever said anything about him being Jewish and he's a Rep

Thanks cassy82 and CJaye! Mr. Cantor's cultural backrgound should be of no relevance at all, but I think the angle of the story is that John McCain is one broadminded guy, despite being a Republican desperately trying to besmirch his rival any which way he Mc Can; he's saying, why, I have friends of all cultures!
I am surprsied that Eric Cantor is the only Jewish Republican, as we have a fine tradition of Jews in politics here in England, dating back to Disraeli. It would not be "news" here.

First off, there are many Jewish Republicans, he is just the only one currently serving in the HOR. The fact that he is Jewish is only relevant due to the Untited States' special relationship with Israel. There are a lot of people in the USA who feel that Israel has far too much influence over US policy and many others to whom the unquestioning support of Israel is an important part of their belief system. Hence the interest in his background.
