The Binghamton shooter was laid off from IBM. I'm not Asian, but do you just assume that all Asians don't speak English?? Seems to me, it's not a good time to fan racial and ethnic blame.

The killer appears to be of laotian, cambodian or chinese origin though he may have lived in Vietnam. Voong is not a  last name of "Kinh" people, composing more than 90 percent of Vietamese. There is not a single Vietnamese word that has the "oo" in it as in Voong, his last name.

I think that it is highly hypocritcal and INAPPROPRIATE of you to even mention the Virginia Tech massacre, drawing on the similarity that they are both Asian when even you state that such comparisons are "unmerited." Please stop perpetuating that sort of racial ignorance, especially if you want your blog to be viewed as credible. These sorts of comparisons can easily be internalized by people and lead to racial discrimination.

Those men were exceptionally crazy and should not be discussed in relation to their race, only their psychological condition. It is not reflective of some homicidal trend in Asian men so drawing such comparisons are indicative of considerable ignorance!

I have a home in Johnson City, NY (about a half mile for Voong's home on Taylor St)  This incident is disgusting and did not have to occur.  In the wake of the Vietnam war local churches aided in the resettlement of many Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese refugees.   Seemed like an example of altruism. (wrong) Community support soon evaporated.  The refugees were basically abandoned to subsist in slum dwellings.  On a whole these folks did not assimilate well into the community.  Second generation has a very high dropout rate and contribute significantly to the crime statistics in the community.  It was a stupid idea in the first place then the do gooders cut and ran when the politians started pointing to the swollen welfare rolls. 

It's a shame innocent had to die.

You shouldn't make such generalizations about the language abilities of both men and you should think about checking your sources before you write such things.  I agree with Michael Al that it was wrong to assume or just listen to one source.  If you're going to be writing something and publishing it for the public, you need to make sure as a reporter you're giving all the facts, not opinions.

these LUTHERANS get ahold of these poor primitive types, and try to convert them to their own ways, bringing them into civilization, making them jump through hoops. Maybe this guy would have been happier living in his country of origin, insted of becoming a Lutheran. I don't think the so called Christian Lutherans are importing Buddists or Muslims if they are Christians. Why would a Christian organization import non-Christians ? Seems as though these Lutherans take advantage of these foreign people , get them here and maybe abandon them. Since the Lutheran church is based in Europe, they ought to bring them to Europe, where the social system would care for them. Lutherans maybe get tax money and are making a fortune bringing these poor people into america and then dumping them  off in  . I pity the poor immigrant, these Lutherans are evil.

He was better off in his pristine , quiet country. the Luterans and catholic charities make big money importing these poor non christians, collecting a fee from our government, and getting them on welfare. After the welfare runs out , these poor primitives have to look for a job and there are none. I can understand why he shot up the place. He considered himself to be a failure, unable to support a family. Lutherans and Catholic Charities dump these people off where there are no jobs after the church collects a fee from us government. I PITY THESE POOR NON CHRISTIAN IMMIGRANTS, VICTIMIZED BY THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND LUTHERANS. LUTHERAN GERMAN, CATHOLIC CHARITIES, ROME. BOTH SIDED WITH HITLER IN WWII. I guess if the Lutherans and Catholic Charities arnt in th business of conversion;,they must be in the business of converting our US Dollars to Euro's. The US government pays those two sponges for each and ever immigrant they bring in to fill up the empty slums in our jobless cities. Now how or why a Christian organization can bring in non christian immigrants, get paid by the government to do it, dump the poor immigrants in an inner city slum where there are no jobs--well the German Lutheran and Romish Catholic Charities are living off the US tax payer . Human cargo, taking these non chirstian primitive out of their peaefull environment and dumping them. Open your eyes. We  are being robbed. America First, we have had every job sent overseas and these sponges are telling immigrants they can get a job ? Hitler's henchmen are still waging war on America. Kick these Euro trash  "charity " organizations out of america and  let the immigrants wait in line like the others did

the oakland police killing, the alabama shooting death of 10 innocents, the nursing home killing spree of more than 10 ppl in north carolina, the guy who beheaded his sisters, the shooting death of 3 police in pittsburg.  do these klling link together? yet this incident and VA tech shooting somehow "link" together in american minds because the shooters turn out to be asians. how ridiculous it can be.  i see different racist comments about deporting all asians back to where they were. but when the killing is commited by white people, did anybody mention about deporting all the whites back to europe.  america and americans so f kk up.

He was Vietnamese, his family has verified they are from Vietnam and his name is Linh Phat which is clearly Vietnamese, it is possible that the last name is misspelled because the US reporters aren´t the best at spelling foreign names.  However, I will go with the family on the fact they know where they are from.  They have no reason to lie...there is no evil plot to condemn the Vietnamese community.

Vietnamese simply have a hard time dealing with the idea that someone could possibly be mentally ill, they don´t believe in mental illness and it remains taboo to this day. That may be why he never got the help he needed.
