The sister of the only documented Briton to die in the bloodbath of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia is calling for the UN to put Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Comrade Duch on trial for her brother's torture and murder. Her brother John Dewhirst, was a young man when the Khmer Rouge captured him and his travelling companions when they strayed into Cambodian waters.
John Dewhirst died at the infamous prison overseen by Comrade Duch, the scene of at least 17 000 deaths.
John was the only Briton among 17,000 to die after being captured during the communist Khmer Rouge’s rule over Cambodia in the 1970s.
Comrade Duch is currently on trial in Cambodia for war crimes. He has admitted his part in the torture and murder of the 17 000 people imprisoned at his facility. During the time of the Khmer Rouge in the '70s millions of Cambodians were killed by the Pol Pot regime.
John Dewhirst's sister, Hilary Holland, is calling for a UN trial because she fears that the horror that was the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia is becoming forgotten by the younger generations and it needs to be remembered.
“What happened in Cambodia isn’t generally known to today’s generations. It should be a part of history lessons. People should remember what happened there.
