John Edward Jones died in Utah's Nutty Putty Cave during a rescue attempt. John Edward Jones was stuck upside-down in an 18 inch-by-10 inch crevice. As more than thirty rescuers worked to pull Jones up from the Nutty Putty Cave, one of the mechanisms failed, and John Edward Jones slipped back down to his earlier position, where he died.

The Nutty Putty Cave is a thermal cave beside Utah Lake, visited by over 5,000 spelunkers a year. The entrance to the cave is only two feet wide. Nutty Putty Cave map (pdf)
