John Floyd Thomas Jr: West Side Rapist Serial Killer Identified
A decades old serial killer and rapist has been identified thanks to advances in modern DNA science. John Floyd Thomas Jr., now aged 72, was identified as the West Side Rapist serial killer after DNA technology tied him to five murders.
As the West Side Rapist serial killer John Floyd Thomas Jr. killed at least 22 women in the 1970's and 1980's. He killed his victims by strangulation and covered their faces when he left them. Poor police communication combined with conflicting testimony from survivors stalled the case for decades.
Now, more than two decades after he killed his last identified victim John Floyd Thomas Jr. has been arrested. An ex-con who was in jail twice on sexual assault charges, John Floyd Thomas Jr. has been conclusively linked to 5 of the West Side Rapist murders, and is a prime suspect in 25 other similar assaults where the rape victims survived.

The first wave of slayings haunted Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. The killer slipped mostly unseen through the night, preying on older women who lived alone. He raped them and squeezed their necks until they passed out or died. Of the 17 who were killed, he placed pillows or blankets over their faces.
The second wave hit a decade later in Claremont -- five older women raped and strangled, faces again covered. Even with at least 20 survivors, police never connected the two homicide-and-rape rampages nor solved either of them. The victims gave conflicting descriptions of the rapist, police in different jurisdictions didn't communicate, and DNA technology had not come into use.Now authorities say they have linked John Floyd Thomas Jr., a 72-year-old state insurance claims adjuster who twice has been convicted of sexual assault, to five of the slayings. Detectives also describe him as a suspect in up to 25 more based on the circumstances of those crimes.

Great that we have DNA or we would have never known. Of course a life sentence, in his case, will be a short period. He probably needs a lot of medical attention too. One that got away too long.

I agree it is atrocious police work, but remember they didn't have DNA back then. Seriously, why did they not look into this harder, maybe since the victims were older so nobody cared as much, hmmm? BTW, I find it funny that you have to click a link to find a picture of John Floyd Thomas Jr.! Political Correctness that you have, it's too bad you have to talk about such a no no subject as a Black Serial Killer at all, let alone provide a picture. How racially insensitive of you.
